Kampot

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Kampot

Post by frank lee bent »

Was there over the weekend, great food and pretty cheap- really built out since my last visit a few years ago.
Full of raving crazies, moto accidents and stinking backpackers. literally stinking.
seems a bit frayed and desperate = seedier than sihanoukville/

Here now. I wouldn't say "seedier than Sihanoukville," but I can see the rest. A lot of new businesses. A lot of potless young tourists. Blatant drugs. Disinterested locals. The tone has changed. The pace is picking up, and getting less quiant by the month. And I think that's part of it, knowing what it was. If I was a tourist who arrived today for the first time I'd think it was something special, that I'd got there just in time, right at the beginning of tourist development. But knowing, looking back only a couple few years it does now look like paradise almost lost. God knows what it's going to look like in 5 years.

I see that the old prison is gone. A flat open mudscape now. Only the two colonial office buildings at the front remain. And if the concept drawing of the future development on the sign is correct, only one will be preserved in the end.

It's 9:20PM in Kampot and there are a dozen+ places open and within walking distance where I can sit a a bar and get a drink. Ugh.

So I think I'll go have a drink.

Nope, and the general consensus among expats seems to be that is that they don't want any. There are some beergardens and ktv's with hostesses though.

Kampot has appeared on some backpacker blogs over the last 2-3 years as the new "in" place to party. Then it's clear the plague has landed.

Land swap a good 15km out of town. East, I think.
