I heard that speaking with a Glaswegian accent will discourage conversation with most people.
(Full disclosure: I have been known to speak fluent Glaswegian very late at night after enough beer, but usually it's a sort of esperanto.)

However. I've deliberately not spoken because there's been British mongs around whilst abroad but that was in Tenerife.
I've a German mate in Cambodia who pretends he's Dutch (he speaks Dutch) to Germans.
