The Thai suspect wanted for shooting a former Cambodian opposition MP to death in Bangkok has been arrested in Cambodia, police said on Wednesday night.

Ekalak Paenoi, 41, had fled across the border after carrying out the shooting of Lim Kimya on Tuesday evening. He was apprehended at a restaurant in Battambang province around 4.30pm on Wednesday afternoon.

Cambodian police joined by investigators from the Metropolitan Police in Bangkok took the suspect to the Battambang Provincial command centre before sending him to the Internal Security Command in Phnom Penh for further questioning.

Pol Lt Gen Sayam Boonsom, commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, said the suspect was likely to be a gun for hire and someone may have identified the target for him.

Police later released a picture of the person who was believed to the spotter who pointed out Lim Kimya for the shooter. He is reportedly a Cambodian national who travelled on the same tourist bus that Lim Kimya had taken from Siem Reap to Bangkok on Tuesday

BANGKOK — Thai police, in cooperation with Cambodian authorities, have arrested the main suspect in the assassination of Mr. Lim Kimya, a 74-year-old Cambodian political activist and former opposition MP. The suspect was apprehended in Cambodia on January 8, just one day after the killing in Bangkok’s historic district.

Ekkalak Paenoi, known as Sergeant M, is accused of shooting Mr. Lim on the evening of January 7 at a road median opposite Wat Bowonniwet Vihara in Phra Nakhon district. The assassination was carried out with three shots.

The suspect’s background reveals a troubled history in the Thai Navy, where he had been disciplined with detention twice, in 2021 and 2022. In 2023, he was dismissed from service after being charged with absence without leave.

Investigators identified Sergeant M as the suspected contract killer on January 8. Prior to the incident, he had been working as a motorcycle taxi driver and running errands for local vendors. Local community members expressed shock at his involvement, saying they had perceived him as harmless during his routine work and were unaware of his background

You have to be pretty dumb to assassinate a Cambodian in Thailand and then have no better idea than fleeing to Cambodia, of all places. That certainly limits the chance that he'll be among us for much longer.

The assassination of former Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) lawmaker Lim Kimya on January 7 in Bangkok has sent shockwaves through political circles in both Cambodia and Thailand.
The murder has sparked accusations, protests and a whirlwind of speculation, little of which was reduced when Cambodian National Police officers, acting on information from their Thai counterparts, arrested a suspect in Battambang province on January 8.

The incident has become a flashpoint for escalating political tensions, with opposition figures from both countries denouncing the killing and demand justice.

Thai opposition MPs urged swift action to apprehend those behind the crime, while Cambodian opposition leaders abroad have begun to allege involvement by the Cambodian government, a claim denied by Phnom Penh.

Sam Rainsy, former president of the court-dissolved CNRP, took to social media to allege transnational repression by HE.

“Several dozen members of the opposition have been coldly assassinated. I myself have been the target of several assassination attempts,” he wrote, accusing Cambodian authorities of orchestrating the killing.

Rainsy also claimed that Senate president HE had threatened him on French soil and expressed hope that Thai authorities would be more cooperative than their Cambodian counterparts in uncovering the truth.

Thai media speculated that an obese Cambodian captured on CCTV – who was on the same bus as the victim and fled the scene immediately after the shooting – may have been asked to point him out to the killer.

On January 8, Thai police sought an arrest warrant for Pich Kimsrin, a 24-year-old Cambodian national, for “joint premeditated murder”, according to Naewna.

CCTV showed a man alleged to be Kimsrin deboarding the same bus as Kimya, near the 13th mall roundabout in Bangkok.

The alleged accomplish was close to Kimya when he was shot twice.

After the incident, Ekkalak fled on a motorcycle, while the suspected accomplice was reported to have travelled to Suvarnabhumi Airport and returned to Cambodia.

According to Thailand’s TV7, police are still searching for the man who pointed out the target.

Ekkalak is being questioned by Cambodian internal security forces in Phnom Penh.

It is expected that the suspect will be prosecuted in Cambodia first, for entering the country illegally,” they added.
Fair Party MP Kannavee Suebsang accused the Cambodian government of targeting anti-government activists and alleged secret cooperation between the Thai and Cambodian authorities to suppress opponents.

He cited the 2020 disappearance of Thai activist Wanchalerm Satsaksit in Cambodia and the recent deportation of a Cambodian activist from Thailand.

Kannavee criticised Thailand for abandoning its long-standing protocol against deporting political asylum seekers, allowing foreign opposition activists to be killed within its borders.

The fat bloke is the spitting image of a senior military officer I knew quite well. One of these Major Generals by age 25 type of officers, never seems to do much soldiering work.

Just checked him again on social media, it's an uncanny likeness. Don't think it's a good idea to share.
