The point is that accomodation and food are necessities, not individual choices or options but, yeah, the budget available to cover those is individual.

Up to a point. For me AC might be a necessity, but you might not care about it at all, for instance.

Plus, what's the point of moving if you can just afford the necessities? Most people in the West have all the necessities covered already, either by their own means or provided by the Nanny State. Isn't the whole point of moving to make some kind of improvement in your life?

so one could just add entertainment to the list

if ur new to cambodia, thailand etc etc it could run into the $100's, if not $1,000's /month depending on how much you drink, socialize, pay for activities and how often prefer company at night
for me, my entertainment runs less than $20/month

...what's the point of moving if you can just afford the necessities?
for many, (retirees specifically) getting by in a country, not of ur own, where the climate is enjoyable and things are different, is far preferable than getting by in dreary old.....( fill in the blank)
...Isn't the whole point of moving to make some kind of improvement in your life?
I did not move to SE Asia to improve my life, but for a change of life

I don't see any problem with including an "entertainment" position. It might be valuable information for some, as a reference data point at least.

As long as it's clearly stated like this, anyone just interested in necessities can simply deduct it from the total.

Yes, Cambodia can be quite overwhelming for newbies I guess, eating up reserves fast.

And the thread is about monthly budgets anyway. That includes basic needs and anything else that you pay.
Cost of living is the base line for how much you need per month to be able to live somewhere in order to know if you can afford it. Rent, visa, utilities, food etc. The necessities.

Just as its defined in the dictionary: "the amount of money that a person needs to pay for basic needs such as food and somewhere to live"

But yes, entertainment need to be budgeted for so i agree with you there. However think its too individual to be worth passing on as a fact to others about how much you need to have a good life here.
Many people in the west are screwed with a minimal income that will not cover their basics. So they are living a life of misery. That same money abroad might improve their quality of life immensely and reduce the struggle.

For me, this is an exercise of living within my means. Thankfully I have my own reserves - but I am getting a lot of pleasure managing that and watching it grow - so I do not want to touch it at all. I want to see if I can live well enough on my minimal modest pension incomes.

i would have "dining out" separate from entertainment, ( bars, socializing, bar fines, paying for things you participate in ( golf, movies, water parks, parasailing, diving etc )
Vacation ( hotels, airfare, bus, eating, entrance tickets )

"other" Misc ( i allow $30 / month for this) as above what goes in entertainment

But thats just me :-)
