Old Cambodia hands will understand this saying in Khmer:

Knyei Kantae Chas, Kantae Hul - which loosely translates as - The older ginger gets, the spicier it becomes.

This term is used both in connection with women and also with getting older and gaining knowledge through life's experiences.

It is analogous with . . . fine wine takes time to age and comes in older bottles.

I totally get you. Just as escorts believe they are better than strippers. You believe that your $350 a month deal to get your place clean and your dick sucked is somehow a curated experience not to be compared with the monger who pays for a night.

Humans have incredible skills when it comes to elevating themselves above others.

I don't know how to say that in Khmer.

There's another Cambodian proverb:

គោចាស់ស៊ីស្មៅខ្ចី

It's more or less pronounced as "ko chah see smaw khchei"

And it means "The old cow eats the fresh/young grass".

It refers to older men courting younger women.

When this proverb is used in public the women will usually reply with "រាគអាចម៍" (reak ach) which means something like "get diarrhea".

Another view.

Quite so, Kammekor,

Some prefer young spring lamb.
Others prefer mutton.

It's been fun "stirring the pot".

And many after a few beers end up with mutton dressed as lamb.

But sometimes an old chicken makes the best soup... etc. etc.

Going out, buying hookers and eating fancy meals is not part of a cost to live budget. Those are extra options and not a actual cost of living.
So it's actually a "cost to survive" budget?
Well, thats what cost of living is, right? The cost to live somewhere. Entertainment is not a cost of living.

Everyone spend different amounts on going out, eating out, hookers, drugs etc so it becomes misguiding when people include these costs when telling someone else how much they need to be able to live here.

I would argue that entertainment is an important part of the cost of living. I don't see how a bare subsistence is valid, nobody I know lives like that. And the thread is about monthly budgets anyway. That includes basic needs and anything else that you pay.

Cost of living is the base line for how much you need per month to be able to live somewhere in order to know if you can afford it. Rent, visa, utilites, food etc. The necessities.

Just as its defined in the dictionary: "the amount of money that a person needs to pay for basic needs such as food and somewhere to live"

But yes, entertainment need to be budgeted for so i agree with you there. However think its too individual to be worth passing on as a fact to others about how much you need to have a good life here.

Aren't rent and food just as individual?
