10 year Cambodian driving license

Post by highrider »

Hi,

I've been in communication with a driving school regarding applying for the 10-year driver's license.

Can someone who's been through the process recently, especially in conjunction with a driving school, explain the process?

According to my enquiries, I'll need to present:

Passport with E category visa extended to either 6 or 12 months;
6 photographs;
Book the exam for a Monday or Tuesday only (no other days of the week available, probably like this only for foreigners)
Driving practice (even though I can drive very well, but it's part of the driving school conditions) on a Saturday only
Sangkat residence letter (can also be supplied by the driving school for an additional fee)

I have just downloaded the app, though does anyone have a copy of the Cambodian driving code in English?

Also, how easy or difficult are the questions and how was the process doing the practical exam?

I've also been told to specify whether I'd prefer a manual or automatic transmission. I prefer manual (stick shift) and thus will be able to drive both types of vehicles. I'm actually surprised Cambodia cares - they seem to have copied Australia, but not America (though in America, barely 2% of vehicles on the road still have a manual transmission). Even Thailand doesn't make a distinction, you will get the same license regardless of whether you practiced in a manual or automatic transmission.

My report on getting the license earlier this year: the-road/cambodian-driving-licence-t407 ... %20license

Both practical and theoretical are pretty hard if you haven't practiced. The multiple choice test you just have to learn by heart as some questions make no sense. And forget passing the practical if you haven't practiced it, it is tricky as.

I would be interested in the name / contact data of the driving school. I have the problem, that my landlord is usually more than extremely busy and getting the Sangkat residence letter usually requires him to go there in person. Actually this is the reason, why I haven't done my driver licence yet (although being here for 5 years now), so if they can help here for a small fee, that would be a key factor for me
Driving on Cambodian roads is just like playing a classic arcade top scroller. The only difference is a force feedback controller, the limitation to one life only and the inability to restart, once Game Over

Come on now, I have over 25 years driving experience on both the left and right hand sides of the road and I drive daily.

Pretty sure in developing countries like Cambodia, you only drive around a track and I assume, going through a driving school, passing is almost automatic isn't it?

That being said, I can certainly easily pass a simple driving test on my own accord, especially having gone through the vigorous Australian test and easily having passed my test in America too.

It's the theory exam, which in my experience, having done it in other countries, that may trip people up based on the strange questions they might ask so I'll be sure to practice and memorize the answers. Thanks for your tip.

I've been driving considerably longer than you, starting in Kenya. Trust me, if you do not know the little tricks the driving school instructor tells you, it will be extremely hard. The reverse parking only leaves about 5 centimeters on each side, you touch any pole and it is game over. And you can only adjust once and then have to park in one go.

When I did my test, there were quite a few foreigners you thought they could show the examiners how to drive. They all failed.

So what you're saying is they place poles alongside the kerb, which you have to park in between? I've never hit anything while parking, except once when I was 18.

No. The parallel parking is easy. I am talking about reversing into a "garage" as it were. Anyway, I do not want to continue arguing but, as I pointed out, every single person that did the test on their own failed that day.

Obviously Khmer applicants don't have to pass this test. :facepalm: :facepalm: :facepalm: :ROFL: :ROFL: :ROFL:

I was in a Grab Toyoto Prius last night and the driver was incapable of getting the car through a ~10ft gap, even though the front of the vehicle was almost level with the gap. Even motorbikes of both sides of him passing through both gaps did not persuade him that he could easily pass through it. And there we sat until the lights changed. :facepalm:
