Agreed AE. I've been asked a number of times if something on TV is real, coming to the conclusion that a lot of locals have little understanding of acting, movie sets, special effects and so on. Also noticed it with some of the Nat Geo stuff on weird animals too.AE86 wrote: Actually I something I would be concerned about for Cambodia is how naive some are towards the internet. To me it seems natural to know the difference between reality and online fantasy BS, but the amount of Khmer I've seen that take everything on the internet literally, and possibly to "heart" is worrying to me.
As you say, taking it literally is worrisome.

Re: Porn should be censored in Cambodia: Adhoc report
For me the article raised a couple of questions:
1/ Do Cambodians have a porn culture ? Given that most Cambodians don't "read" a lot of anything, including magazines, compared to western culture, is there shiny paper porn available ? Or is this just an example of forbidding things that don't really exist ?
2/ What does it mean if we say that we think that Cambodians should not watch porn movies etc because they might take the action literally ? Yeah, it sounds patronizing and colonial. After all the Rambo movies are everywhere, and how many Cambodians take themselves for Rambo ?
However, I do agree to a certain extent with what others have said about Cambodians taking fiction literally. In Khmer culture, there is often a very fine line between myth and (historical) reality. There is no general culture of literary fiction.
So, I don't know. Any takers ?

Hah - bukkake exists because Japanese porn laws say you can't see someone's unmentionables. In the same way that Urotsukidoji and demon tentacle cocks exist, weird alien ball-kicking Tamakeri is a thing but pubes are pixellated. It's been proven that if people have a release at home they do not commit offences on people. If you jerk off on the internet you do not commit crimes against the person.

A good friend's missus wanted to know if we have zombies in Australia, too, and what we do about them. She'd been watching Walking Dead - as a docudrama.

Is this the point where one makes a joke about Tony Abbott?StroppyChops wrote:A good friend's missus wanted to know if we have zombies in Australia, too, and what we do about them. She'd been watching Walking Dead - as a docudrama.

i did stumble upon, whilst browsing one of the famous streaming sites, a load of khmer porn, it was mainly home videos of khmer guys and their girlfriends, poor camara phone quality for most, not very arousing tbhAnchor Moy wrote:For me the article raised a couple of questions:
