Cambodian Police Arrest Man for $22,700 Traffic Accident Scam

[CAMBODIA NEWS] Cambodian authorities have apprehended a man suspected of orchestrating a sophisticated phone scam, defrauding victims of over $22,700 by posing as a relative involved in a fatal traffic accident.



On July 26, 2024, the Department of Anti-Cybercrime, in collaboration with the Kandal Provincial Police Commissariat, arrested a suspect identified as Kuch Suy Try. The arrest came in response to multiple complaints from victims who had fallen prey to a fraudulent scheme involving fake traffic accident claims.

According to authorities, Try contacted victims by phone, impersonating a relative who claimed to have been involved in a fatal traffic accident. He then requested money to settle the alleged incident, successfully scamming a total of $22,700 from various individuals.

During questioning, Try confessed to the fraud, admitting that he had purchased SIM cards from unconventional sources, including street vendors and mobile shops near factories, to carry out his deceptive activities.

The suspect has been transferred to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court for further legal proceedings. The Department of Anti-Cybercrime has issued a public warning, urging citizens to exercise caution when receiving calls from individuals claiming to be relatives in distress. They advise verifying such claims through trusted channels before providing any financial assistance.
