Drinking Session Ends in Railway Death for Construction Worker
Construction Worker Found Dead Near Railway Tracks in Phnom Penh
[CAMBODIA NEWS] (Phnom Penh): A 32-year-old construction worker was discovered dead near railway tracks in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, in the early hours of August 2, 2024. The incident occurred along the Phnom Penh-Kampot railway line in Phloeung Chheh Roteh Lech Village, Phloeung Chheh Roteh Sangkat, Kambol District.
The deceased, identified as Sa Roeun, was a widower with two children. Originally from Tuol Trach Village, Tuol Snuol Commune, Kroch Chhmar District in Tbong Khmum Province, Roeun had been working and living at a construction site in the area for approximately two weeks.
According to witnesses, Roeun and his cousin had been drinking at various locations throughout the evening of August 1. After consuming alcohol at three different establishments, they continued their drinking session near Wat Svay Poch temple in Kantouk Sangkat, Kambol District. Later, the pair purchased more beer and decided to drink by the railway tracks at the incident site.
Around midnight, Roeun's cousin suggested they return to their lodgings, but Roeun insisted on staying behind. Approximately 30 minutes later, a train traveling from Phnom Penh to Kampot passed through the area.
At around 1:00 AM on August 2, Roeun's body was discovered in a pool of blood with severe head injuries. Authorities suspect he may have been struck by the passing train, possibly falling from the tracks due to his intoxicated state.
The incident has shocked the local community. Roeun's body remained at the scene until the following morning, allowing authorities to conduct a thorough investigation. After completing the necessary procedures, the body was released to the family for traditional funeral rites in his hometown.
Local authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Roeun's death.
