#1 Cause of Death for Americans Abroad (US State Department)
The US State Department has released data showing the top causes for UNNATURAL deaths for Americans living or traveling abroad. Stats do not include military or government employees.
About 750 US citizens die abroad from unnatural causes each year.
The number 1 cause of death for Americans in Cambodia? You guessed right: DRUG OVERDOSE. Same in Laos.
Vietnam and Indonesia? Motorbike accidents.
Where are you most likely to get murdered as an American overseas? Guatemala, Honduras, Venezuela, El Salvador, Colombia and Panama.
I was surprised to hear that more Americans die of drug overdoses than car crashes in the States.
I also wonder how many of the famous "heart attacks" in Cambodia just get tallied as a natural death.
Any way you look at it, a lot of Americans are dying from drug overdoses in Cambodia, which will likely remain the number 1 killer here for years to come.

The number of unnatural deaths among Americans abroad has ranged from 651 in 2006 to 1,064 in 2010, the year of a catastrophic earthquake in Haiti killed more than 100,000 people.
But, according to the report, the number of deaths average between 700 to 850.......

Drug overdoses kill more Americans than car crashes at home, but they're a far less common cause of death for U.S. travelers, with little more than 200 recorded in the past 10 years. Still, they were the leading reason Americans died in Cambodia and Laos......

The government doesn’t keep comprehensive records of civilian deaths abroad. But the State Department is required to collect and publish information on citizens’ deaths from unnatural causes, recording more than 8,000 in the past 10 years......

So going abroad is much safer than staying at home for an American? Given they are much more likely to die by being gunned down by their police force or a member of their own family at home...?

750 seems awfully low. Lack of passports must have something to do with it.

Unlikely. Far more Americans have passports than e.g. Brits. Only about 43,000,000 Brits have a passport whereas more than 146,000,000 Americans hold passports.wackyjacky wrote:750 seems awfully low. Lack of passports must have something to do with it.

But would venture to guess that 75% or more of those Americans never travel more than 3 hours by plane away from the states
ie most go to Mexico, Canada ( both where before you did not need a passport) and the Caribbean only.

Very possibly. But they are also the number one non-Asian nationality tourist arrival in e.g. Cambodia.phuketrichard wrote:But would venture to guess that 75% or more of those Americans never travel more than 3 hours by plane away from the states

And I wonder what percentage of European passport holders travel more than three hours flight from home.

Not really a reasonable argument to quote numbers without or even excluding the comparable % passport holders to the countries.
The latest published figures of Uk citizens is approx 65 million, therefore it is nonsensical to compare basic numerical stats to US passport holders [if correct] at 146 million.
A far more balanced view could be [sourced from the interweb June 2015];

A far more balanced view could be [sourced from the interweb June 2015];
"The percentage of Americans with passports is at an all-time high, and at 38%, up from 3% in 1974, that’s something to tweet home about."
"Despite all this good news, we’re still trailing, by a significant margin, many of our international buddies in this race.
A full three years ago, CNN reported that upwards of 60% of Canadians wield passports, while the United Kingdom’s number is closer to 75%.
If we’re to close these gaps, or go visit members of either group in their homes in better numbers, we’ll need help from Middle America, where the percentage of passport-holders is dragging just a bit."
