Bus/Train Phnom Penh to Poipet (any update June 2024?)

Post by mgb »

Hi travel guru,

I plan to take this route in couple of weeks.

Several years not coming back Cambodia (from 2020), I lost all info of bus operators and trains on this route. I assume a lot of changes so I need your help. I have 3 questions:

1. Do Cambodian trains run this route atm? (Phnom Penh to Poi Pet). I cant find any updates from Cambo Railways offcial page.
2. In case I have to take bus, what bus company do you recommend for night trip? (I Google searched and they gave me several operator names, all are new to me except Virak Buntham). Virak is ok but i wonder if any chances for the others?
3. How smooth is it at Poipet & Aran's customs. My last trip, those things there were horrible.

TIA.

I recently wrote a trip report, my journey was from BKK to PP via Poipet.
I believe trains run only to Battambang from PP. Plenty of buses and minibuses and Siennas etc do the route. I just go to NR5 just beyond the Japanese bridge and see who wants to pick me up, so to speak. I don't know about night trips, would not recommend. The fare to PP should be about $20, maybe a bit less.
Customs are nearly irrelevant, it's the immigration that takes time. Shouln't be too bad. Just be sure you either have a Thai visa or be sure you have not already done 2 walk-ins this year.

Virak used to have a bad reputation but they have gone through a major transformation, they now operate some of the best buses in Cambodia. Their trucking/parcels operation is also very reliable.
The trains will be operating to Poipet in the not too distant future.

There doesn't seem to be any good news yet about a direct Bangkok to Phnom Penh train. So when Poipet Station opens in July for passenger traffic, we will have to first take the train from Bangkok to Ban Klong Luk station and then go through Thai and Cambodian immigration in the usual building before boarding the Cambodian train on the other side.

It is expected that the train will wait right at the border to take passengers to Poipet Station and then continue to Battambang and Phnom Penh. I plan to be on the first train as I will be working closely with Royal Railway Cambodia (RRC) to provide publicity for this new route. Lots of exciting things planned including a bus connection to Angkor Wat. More news soon.

In #Cambodia, they are still doing test runs for the #Kiha183 trains. This is to do with training and safety as well as checking on timing for timetables. There will be two classes of carriages which are 1st and 2nd Class with air-conditioning. Expected to start in mid-July.

Greetings from PP
Recent news about the reopening of bus route Phnom Penh-Bangkok (direct, same bus all the way) used to set out near the old post office and later near Bayon Market on Str 118.
Any news on where exactly they start and obviously where to get tickets?
Thanks in advance and thank you for CEO, great place for a lot of info and laughs.

Vireak Buntham do several services a day from their terminal close to Chroy Chongvar roundabout (North of Wat Phnom). You can buy tickets at their terminal or through their app.

They are a bit fishy about changes and cancellations so make sure you buy the correct one unless you know someone working for them being able to help you out.
