American father filing citizenship for son
American father filing citizenship for son
Has anyone here, particularly U.S. citizens, gone through this process recently? I have done some research, but always like to hear from people that have been through these things already, if possible. I believe that I have all necessary documents/proof on my end ready, just waiting a few more months for the kid to be born, and I will get those sorted out too. I've heard of people having different experiences, but haven't spoke directly to anyone that has done it. I'd like it to go as smoothly as possible.
I've been here for the majority of the last two years, it's a genuine relationship, and she's never been in the bar girl industry. (just for when the question inevitably comes up).Wondering if it's accepted/favorable/waste of time and money to get a DNA test at an Embassy accepted facility prior to the interview? I've read that it's not always required, but find it hard to believe that they will grant citizenship solely based on my word and some photographs of us together. Any input or advice is greatly appreciated.

Do Americans really have to prove the child is theirs via DNA testing, even if the father's name is on the Birth Certificate?

The problem here is that no sane western Embassy is going to accept Cambodian documents just like this. Usually they try to verify the authenticity of the submitted docs. This can take several month, and guess who's paying for that effort.

It is up to the consular officer who does the interview.

You are not suggesting that American consular officers are idiots, are you ?

It also depends on your age and financial assets - as crazy as that sounds but true.

You should submit an application for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad to the U.S. Embassy once the child is born. You can also apply for a U.S. passport to establish citizenship for the child. You will need your passport(s), birth certificate identifying both parents, a notarized translation of that birth certificate from an approved translation service, and...cash.
Search the Internet for CRBA and get the specifics.
Best of luck!

Also be aware that "hospital certificates of birth" are not accepted by Americans. You need an official one.

Exactly, and to get this in Cambodia is not only a pain in the ass, it's also very expensive (you got to pay all the Cambodian authorities)PBR STREETGANG wrote:You should submit an application for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad to the U.S. Embassy once the child is born.
Good luck - you need it.

I think it's a lot easier if you're married. Then there's a presumption that it's your kid and that won't be questioned.
