RIP Louis Gossett Jr.

Quick factoid about USMC culture ... somewhere between the 1970s and 1980s, Marine Corps staff non-commissioned officers ranks ceased being called the generic "sergeant" as an all-encompassing term for enlisted Marines from E5 (sergeant) through E9 (sergeant major/master gunnery sergeant). Older generation Marines may recall these days. I think it is still acceptable in the Army.

Louis Gossett Jr played the role of Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley. I believe he was the first black actor to win an Academy Award for best supporting actor. He nailed that role cold.
