5000 riel notes

Post by Gazzy »

Is it possible to get about $30 worth in 5000 riel denominations? I can only get minimum 20,000 riel denominations from the ATM. Need for tips.

I do not know where you live. However, the money changers around the southeast corner of the Central Market in Phnom Penh have (or used to have) large wads of brand new bills of all riel denominations. Alternatively, just go into a bigger bank branch and ask.

A lot of small gold/money stalls are likely to have - or can tell you who does

You can change them at any of the money changers - folks still identifiable by their gold lettered $1=4xxxx KHR on red background signs; they don't just do FX. They are all over the country and are probably gearing up on small notes for Khmer New Year also:

I do the same thing.

I changed up 200,000khr ($50) into 5000khr notes at a changer on 110 and 13. No fees. I am still working out why they didn't bother to try to charge anything. Maybe it's because I am devilishly handsome :chin:

On larger sums they might want something, but for small amounts, it's free - so far.

Im told they have this thing in Cambodia called a "Bank" ( I think my spelling is correct) where you can get thousands of pieces of paper with numbers on them.

And you start by taking a paper ticket with a number on it and then watch a screen with lots of numbers on it and wait for your number to start to flash. Meanwhile, you can watch your phone which also has small numbers on it that keep getting larger, this is called a clock and this is your life ebbing away...

This is Cambodia. 10,000 riel notes work wonders. I dont wait anywhere, and unlike Vegas where you have to pass out a C note just to be looked at, $2 here does the trick.

Hint to newbies: 200,000 in 5K demoninations should last you a month, So to save time, why dont you just make one trip to the bank every few months, get the notes a million riel at a time. Toss them in a drawer and use as needed.

Plus the bank girls get all moist and fluffy when you get a million riel from them.

But 200.000 Riel is worth just under $50 so unless you live in some remote unpopulated area it won't last very long at all. I don't even understand why someone asked this question unless they are very new here, or live in some remote unpopulated area.
