I think it's you that doesn't understand. Most westerners who visit Angkor Wat have a greater appreciation of art & culture than that. The first time my son was at Angkor he said "It's just a pile of old rocks." However he was only about three years old at the time. 8)
Many of us have sites and attractions back in Europe that are almost as old as Angkor Wat (even if far more mundane and less impressive), as do the Chinese (ancient archaeological sites in even the most smallest established towns), and where I come from people still live in 700 year-old houses: Perhaps somewhere in all of this, people from more Northerly parts of the world come for the one thing you can't find, namely, tropical environs and beaches to go with it.

And the people who come to Cambodia generally don't holiday there to begin with (i.e, Malaga is mostly British tourists from what I know), and would probably think some other place like Ibiza or Saint Tropez is too common, Thailand is too commercialised, Myanmar is too dangerous, and Laos is too backward;

That pretty much leaves Vietnam and Cambodia for most of this subset, and Cambodia is generally much easier to get a visa...

That was the point of me posting this in the first place, that so many assume Angkor Wat is Cambodia's main draw for international tourism, but data simply doesn't reflect that. It is the marquee cultural attraction, but most people come here for fun in the sun, not cultural attractions.

Money laundering is also a big draw.

That’s a shame the most popular attraction in France isn’t Paris. There are so many museums and culture there that it would take months (or years) to see them all. But I’ve read once that that Orlando (the city with Disney World) gets more annual visitors than Italy.

Right now the rich Chinese are desperate to get their cash out of mainland China. RMB is being exchanged for dollars and depleting currency reserves. Overseas trips to move their wealth.

Communist government is blocking transfers to prevent currency flight. So the rich go on overseas tours to deposit money. As well as ‘invest’.

Xi has hired North Koreans to make better fake US dollars to shore up reserves as well.
