Blood Tests
I wanted to pay for a doctor and blood tests for a girl who has some health problems, but when I see the price of each test they do I understand why so many Cambodians go directly to the pharmacy to self medicate. Why would they charge so much for each test, as I always thought that it was just a matter of programming the computer on the blood testing machine to do whatever tests you require done.
In Australia I have a full blood test analysis done once a year, which is over 50 items and it's all free.
Do they charge for each and every test like that in Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam

Re: Blood Tests
Some blood tests are really simple, just machine done, those are cheap. Full Blood Count for instance, about USD 2,50 I guess.Tootsfriend wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2024 8:27 am I wanted to pay for a doctor and blood tests for a girl who has some health problems, but when I see the price of each test they do I understand why so many Cambodians go directly to the pharmacy to self medicate. Some require serious lab work, those are more expensive of course.
And I don't think there's something like a free lunch...
Generally yes, but sometimes there are 'packages'.Tootsfriend wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2024 8:27 am Do they charge for each and every test like that in Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam

Re: Blood Tests
At Royal Phnom Penh Hospital, I think you might be able to get one of their promotional deal for combo check up package. They offered different levels from basic to comprehensive … the pricing seemed very reasonable and the service and facilities was excellent. English level was good too.

Re: Blood Tests
As a regular health check after cancer, I had to have regular blood tests, and all things considered, the price at paramed was not that scary. They were reliable, too. As I was having blood tests in UK and Cambodia sequentially, the results were consistent.
Having said that, the other half’s niece had had some blood work done by one of these quacks, and that had got her into a shit physical state that she didn’t recover from.
I arranged for her to see a local expat doc at the tropical diseases place. He arranged for a battery of blood work which if memory serves, came out at $40-something. Renal screening being the main focus in that case, rather along the lines of what I needed at the time.

Re: Blood Tests
Book her in for an all in one service and health check at somewhere decent & reputable like Central or Sunrise hospitals that also don't gouge on prices and have set packages for this sort of thingTootsfriend wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2024 8:27 am I wanted to pay for a doctor and blood tests for a girl who has some health problems, but when I see the price of each test they do I understand why so many Cambodians go directly to the pharmacy to self medicate. Re: Blood Tests
None of these tests are "free" in Australia. You only, don't pay for them as they are covered through Medicare and many of the standard tests are subsidised through the Medicare Benefits Schedule. There are quite a number of tests that are not on the MBS, and so will have to be paid for by the patient.Tootsfriend wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2024 8:27 am I wanted to pay for a doctor and blood tests for a girl who has some health problems, but when I see the price of each test they do I understand why so many Cambodians go directly to the pharmacy to self medicate. Pathology services are not just a machine that will run blood through - there are all sorts of kits, substrates and antibodies, which are required for these tests. Each test also has to run to a set of standards, to ensure that the range is correct.
So the pricing schedule that you have listed looks on par, if not cheaper than the cost in another Western country.

Consultant with a Central Hospital doctor is $ 45 , which equates to around about 25 % of a factory workers monthly salary . A monthly salary in Oz would be around about A $4,000 . I have never heard of an Australian paying 25% [ $1,000 ] for a doctors appointment.
The 6 to 10 blood tests required would cost over $100 ,, which is about 50 % of a factory workers salary. I have never heard of an Australian worker on the min monthly wage paying 50 % [ $2,000 ] for 6 to 10 blood tests.
Perhaps the comparison in your prices is being made with a western country I am unfamiliar with.

Re: Blood Tests
The testing facilities/equipment for blood tests in Thailand, Cambodia, OZ, US are the same, its only the drs /nurses whose salaries are lessTootsfriend wrote: ↑Sat Mar 09, 2024 10:43 amBorn-Confused wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2024 10:06 amNone of these tests are "free" in Australia. Re: Blood Tests
Those are general check up tests. I don't think it's very useful when having (specific) health problems or when you need to diagnose a health problemFridaywithmateo wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2024 9:12 am At Royal Phnom Penh Hospital, I think you might be able to get one of their promotional deal for combo check up package.
