Russians ordered to leave Sri Lanka within two weeks.

Was the Last Hippie Standing a Russian joint? Pretty sure it was European, French actually.orichá wrote: ↑Thu Feb 29, 2024 11:37 amCuriously none of you noticed, or chose not to highlight, one of the main reasons for their expulsion... Investigation launched into order asking Russians to leave country amid blacklash over ‘whites only policy’

...thousands of Russians and a smaller number of Ukrainians staying in the country for an extended period of time and even setting up their own restaurants and nightclubs
It comes amid a furious social media backlash over Russian-run businesses with a “whites only” policy that strictly bars locals. These businesses include bars, restaurants, water sports and vehicle hiring services...
Russians also formerly got in trouble at Otres over the same thing: there was even a dustup or two after they forbade entry to some Cambodian visitors to a nightclub on Otres beach called "Last Hippie Standing"...
So, I am all in favour of Sri Lanka giving the Ruskis the boot. Like too many of the insular Chinese, a lot of them are very poor at mixing with others who are not also from Russia or who don't speak Russian, etc...
...
Anyway, there was one report of it on FB, or online, and that was it. No blanket ban. I don't remember seeing reports of any dust up.

Re: Russians ordered to leave Sri Lanka within two weeks.
I went many times to Last Hippy late at night by motorcycle. It was perhaps owned by a Frenchman, however he or she was always quite absent.
Towards the end, the last two years, it was overwhelmingly popular with Russians and various backpackers. There were most definitely Russians selling me a ticket to get in and working at the bar...
Yes, there was a dustup after they forbade entry to Cambodian guests. Mostly, the bar backpedalled on social media after that fiasco. I didn't witness the racist event, but it most definitely did happen during the period of Russian management, for sure.
Most of the Russians were very friendly but they did keep to themselves.

Re: Russians ordered to leave Sri Lanka within two weeks.
It's happened before. KPS used to be filled with so many Russians that their stores and businesses were all over town, and it even led to some rivalry between a billionaire and another well-connected Russian (though judging by his name, I believe was an ethnic Ukrainian) with Khmer citizenship and his son, which all ended quite dramatically. Since then, there are still a few Russians in Sihanoukville, most of whom seem to blend in pretty well, marrying locals and speaking Khmer, but it's not anywhere like what it was about 10 or even 5 years ago.Felgerkarb wrote: ↑Wed Feb 28, 2024 11:46 pm A few tens of thousands of Russians would certainly change the expat scene in Cambodia...

Re: Russians ordered to leave Sri Lanka within two weeks.
I always thought the Doroshenkos were ethnic Russians from Uzbekistan. Apparently it is a common Ukrainian name but I'm pretty sure Nicolai described himself as Russian. I remember he used to have a Red Hummer H1 with a CCCP and hammer & sickle sticker on the back. Polonsky seems to be a Polish name.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Interesting point. I don't have enough insight there.HaifongWangchuck wrote: ↑Wed Feb 28, 2024 5:56 pm Russia has never had a history of a colonial empire that politically and legally subjugated other races in the way European empires in Africa or Asia did: Every ethnic group in the Imperial Russian Empire was incoporated as part of the nation and given citizenship (which admittingly had extremely limited rights, but they were politically equal to ethnic Russians nonetheless), so this isn't really a mindset of the Russian people because they don't view other races with the same exoticism and mystique as say, the British guy who fetishes the whole pith-helmet experience (also why I'd say Russians are so open to dating interracially, between the Russian historical experience and the Soviet experiment at creating a New Socialist Man).
How do you see the collusion with Germany to slice and gobble up neighboring countries so that each could expand their empire (e.g., Poland, 1939)?

Subjugation of other countries and trying to turn them into New Socialist Men (as per your statement) against their will may be different from racial discrimination, but is it better?
My questions refer to your statement re Russian history, not current Russians who are trying to get away from the war. I probably would try to do the same, so I don't want to blame them either.

I was quite familiar with that...I was a regular for a fair while at The Snake Pit in KPS. Had a bit of a relationship with some rather, colorful, Russians in those days.HaifongWangchuck wrote: ↑Thu Feb 29, 2024 7:39 pmIt's happened before.
