Never heard this, where do you find these friends? Asking for a friend.
I normally drink at sunset in village food shops, rural markets or even sit outside a drink shop on a plastic chair on the street. I always drink my first six-pack alone, then get joined by locals who hear me ordering beer in Khmer and are curious. Their ice-breaker questions are usually:

'You drink with me?'
'Where you stay?'
'How long you stay Cambodia?'

A wee bit later, after they've quenched their thirst, ladies pop into the conversation.
