He said he had once told a Nato leader he would not protect a nation behind on its payments if it came under attack from Russia, and would "encourage them to do whatever they hell they want".
Members of Nato commit to defend any nation in the bloc that gets attacked.
The White House called the comments "appalling and unhinged".
Speaking during a rally in South Carolina on Saturday, Mr Trump said he had made his comments about Russia during a meeting of leaders of Nato countries.
He recalled that the leader of a "big country" had presented a hypothetical situation in which he was not meeting his financial obligations within Nato and had come under attack from Moscow.
Mr Trump said the leader had asked if the US would come to his country's aid in that scenario, which prompted him to issue a rebuke.
"I said: 'You didn't pay? You're delinquent?'... 'No I would not protect you, in fact I would encourage them to do whatever they want. You gotta pay.'"

These nations are Poland, the United States, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Greece and the United Kingdom, the report states.
This number is expected to rise to 11 in 2023, according to Reuters. The four other countries expected to meet that figure are Finland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania, the outlet reported.
“Indeed, in 2023, eleven Allies are projected to reach – or exceed – the 2 percent target,” a NATO spokesperson told Check Your Fact. The spokesperson also pointed Check Your Fact to comments made by NATO Secretary General Jen Stoltenberg on July 7.

Simply political posturing - he is absolutely right that the EU/NATO has not upheld its part of the bargain and the US has been relied on for too long to fund such operations. Of course the USA would do something, he is just pushing them to get their lazy act in order. A nothing-burger compared to the dementia ridden Biden who must be in a real quandary; by rights he should step aside, but then Kamala Harris would be President ... What a time to be alive.

Serbia and Kosovo in the 1990s? NATO involvement in Afghanistan/ Iraq since was purely in the United States' interest. Of course the other countries have realized they need to pay more attention to defense now, especially when it's likely that a Russian asset could be in the White House again soon.

To put some context to Trumps crying about European NATO members not paying their "bills".
First, of course there are no bills in NATO. At least not in a sense Trump is thinking about it. It's a mutual defense alliance. Every member pays for their own military. (I think there are some small, shared payments for administrative expenses.)
Second, the Western and Central European NATO members did spent $345 billion in 2022 for their military. That may seem not so impressive compared to the US's $877 billion, but if you look at Russia, who are spending $86.4 billion while being basically already in war economy mode and China's $292 billion, Europe looks to me like a quite useful ally for the US in potential conflicts. Trump is a total moron to risk losing the powerful European allies. It's way worse for an isolated US to stand alone against a world of potential enemies and indifferent neutrals, than with the combined second largest military in the world as an ally on their side. An ally that is not only linked to them because of military defense considerations, but because of shared ideological believes and geopolitical interests. Destroying all of that just because Trumps toddler brain isn't capable to understand how NATO works would be the biggest damage ever done to the US.
I don't know whose stupidity and ignorance is more frightening. Trumps or that of the millions of US citizens who will still vote for him despite all the outrageous idiocy Trump is showing to them and the rest of world every day.

Well the thing is that he does have a point. Since the end of the cold war in the early 1990s, many European countries have subjected their militaries to an endless series of budget cuts. That wouldn't have worked without relying on Uncle Sam coming to their rescue, unconditionally and in a heartbeat - which has been a pretty selfish position.
Trump’s presidency has served as a long overdue wake-up call, and now the war in Ukraine and the prospect of Trump’s return for another term reinforces the need for European countries to invest a lot more in their militaries.

Trump says these things to deliberately provoke a debate (see above) or prove a point, he doesn't mean the comment to be taken literally. The O'Leary guy in charge of Ryanair is a master at this.
That's a little different to getting confused between Egypt and Mexico, or claiming to talk to world leaders such as Kohl or Mitterrand after they had died.
