Thailand approves tax cuts on booze and night clubs to boost tourism

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

NOW tax cuts on Booze
BANGKOK: Thailand's cabinet has approved a tax cut on alcoholic beverages and entertainment venues to boost tourism, a government spokesperson said on Tuesday (Jan 2).

Taxes on wine will be reduced from 10 per cent to 5 per cent and on spirits from 10 per cent to zero, Chai Wacharonke told reporters, adding that excise tax on entertainment venues will be halved from 10 per cent to 5 per cent.

The tax measures will expire at the end of this year, he said.

The announcement comes after authorities in November extended opening hours for entertainment venues by two hours to 4am for nighttime revellers and tourists.

looking for 34 million arrivals this year ( 28 for 2023) 39.9 in 2019

FYI; in 2010 it was ONLY 15.9
2014 24.8

You'd think that would be the FIRST thing they'd do to boost tourism, lol. That's always been a pain in the ass there.

That's welcome news, but it has to be asked why is wine then so ridiculously expensive in Thailand ?

Presumably it's the import duties ?

yea, its a bitch, but still u can drink in bars and restaurants ,so how will being able to buy it 24/7 increase tourism?

It’s an old law from the Thai government.
It’s illegal for all shops to sell alcohol in the afternoons, only 11 am to 2 pm and 5 pm to midnight
And nobody knows why. The only thing for sure is the shop owners are strict about the rules.

just another thai quirk>>>
and still 28 million arrivals arent finding it something to get overaly concerned about :beer3:

Probably in the same way that making beverages a mere 5% cheaper will increase tourism, lol.

Isn't that to curb underage drinking? I see the logic there.

Import taxes are higher in Thailand than in Japan. JW is cheaper in Japan than Thailand.

Can't say that I have ever had a problem getting a beer in Thailand, regardless the hour.
