Riverside - October 2023
They pruned the trees today on riverside. The ones near the riverbank had to be done off ladders but for the coconut trees near the road they used a lamp post access truck. The operator gently sending the cutter into the fronds until he disappeared from view and all you could see was the occasional frond drifting to the ground. The end result displays some artistry on the part of the tree surgeons.
The hornbills put in an occasional appearance, flapping their huge wings languidly and sending smaller avian creatures into a flurry of concern.
The Tonle river levels are high and until last week there was a strong reverse flow towards the big lake, albeit the fringes near the river banks stubbornly persisted in the southerly direction. But now the full river steams resolutely towards its embrace of the Mekong in that vast expanse of water opposite the Royal Palace.
A Cham fishing boat drifts towards the western shore to gather its nets and send whatever is inside up the steps to the shrouded ladies of the market. Later, their big sister boats, like marine double-decker buses, muscle to the shore to gather those who relish a brief escape from a landlubber life of toil.
The flags have been renewed and bear no signs of disarray as they proudly furl and unfurl in the breeze. As twilight approaches, the citizenry gather. Boys to play football or to skilfully send their shoes in a spinning whirl across the smooth paving of the promenade. A group of bigger boys on bikes in a hurry to get to some unknown rendezvous suddenly appear, zig zagging around the walkers. Sellers plod steadily along with their wheeled carts of food or drinks. Skaters cruise by, some with expertise and some unsteadily. Groups of girls, dressed up for each other, stride confidently through this melee of humanity.
As darkness rapidly falls the lights twinkle from the boats and from the opposite shore - then a mighty lurid green luminance suddenly emerges to announce its dominance over the nocturnal riverside scene, exhorting the populace to consume some beverage of questionable taste, an exhortation which most ignore. On and off goes the light in unrelenting enthusiasm, as it advertises its lamentable message.

You forgot to mention the shirtless barangs sunbathing along the riverside , but then why would you want to talk about yourself and your mates .

Re: Riverside - October 2023
Good writing, except for this "The Tonle river levels are high.."
Silence, exile, and cunning.
Re: Riverside - October 2023
Nice style.... You remind me of the great Bruce Chatwin.
Why not consider writing a book of detailed vignettes like this riverside description interspersed with more personal or secondhand episodes of colourful Cambodian life?

Re: Riverside - October 2023
The river flow is still strong so the races should be quite a spectacle. I saw one boat practising and the speed was phenomenal.
All the rubbish has been cleared from the river banks. Now they are replacing any torn flags along the promenade.
The sand cargo boats have been commandeered to support huge steel frameworks for illuminated boat shapes on the CC side of the river. They begin opposite 136 and make a solid line upriver for about 200m.
They switch them on to test them sometimes and they have lovely colours and shapes.
The first of them is directly under the lurid green flashing monster of questionable taste so that may need to be turned off for the duration.
The sesne of anticipation is palpable.
