Aren't most security cameras these days controllable so the security guy can pan around looking for people breaking the rules.
To be fair, who hasn't been wanked off in a cinema. Ok it's kinda traditional to sit in the back row but maybe they get a kick from the risk.

My guess would be when staff started getting complaints about their behaviour - vaping, filming, being noisy etc - they zoomed the camera in on them. Pretty much the same way mall security staff will use the cameras to watch a suspected shoplifter before they pounce- they need to be sure they're not falsely accusing them, and they'll have video evidence to back themselves up if it comes to that.
