‘Scamdemic’ is being used to scare off travellers to Cambodia
Taing Rinith / Khmer Times
The government has referred to reports that travellers, especially Chinese, have cancelled plans to visit Cambodia due to the country’s alleged reputation as a hotbed for international job scams and human trafficking as efforts to tarnish the Kingdom’s image.

The negative reports have prompted a representative of travel agents in the Kingdom to urge authorities to fend off the accusations so that they will not derail Cambodia’s tourist sector, which is now on its way to the pre-pandemic level.

Multiple publications by foreign media outlets, including the one entitled “Cambodia’s ‘scamdemic’ reputation scares off travellers from China,” released two weeks ago by Nikkei Asia, claimed that Chinese travellers, who have so far accounted for the majority of international tourists in Cambodia, are now too anxious to come to the Kingdom due to their fear of human trafficking crimes involving victims from across the world, from Vietnam to the US.

One such report published two weeks ago by Nikkei Asia was titled “Cambodia’s scamdemic”.

Cambodia bans Chinese blockbuster ‘No More Bets’ over negative portrayal concerns
27 September 2023
CAMBODIA: Cambodia has recently imposed a ban on the Chinese blockbuster film titled “No More Bets” due to concerns over its unfavourable depiction of the country.

The film, released in early August, claims to be inspired by true events and narrates the story of a computer programmer who is trafficked to an undisclosed Southeast Asian nation, where they become entangled with a violent fraudulent organization.

Notably, the movie also features Khmer scripts.

As reported by The Cambodia China Times, various Cambodian government departments, including the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, and Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, are actively collaborating to address the film’s adverse portrayal of Cambodia.

The Cambodian Ministry of Interior has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the narrative of “No More Bets,” believing that it significantly tarnishes Cambodia’s image.

The Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts has officially decreed the ban on “No More Bets.”

Moreover, the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts is set to work in conjunction with the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications to take measures aimed at curbing the spread of film clips through social media platforms.

Song Man, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, revealed that the ministry has dispatched a letter to the relevant Chinese authorities through the Chinese Embassy in Cambodia.

He emphasized that the Chinese Embassy is actively addressing the issue, and their cooperation will persist.

Song Man stressed that, in response to Cambodia’s request, Chinese authorities have provided access to the complete version of the film.

After viewing the entire film, it was found to be centred around an anti-fraud theme, with the Chinese intending to convey anti-fraud messages to their own population.

However, it has inadvertently cast a negative light on Cambodia and other Southeast Asian nations, such as Myanmar and Thailand, negatively impacting their tourism industries.

Too bad, that would have been a great movie to watch at a Phnom Penh cinema.

The Chinese are risking to take a big hit from the developments in the real estate sector. There simply may be a lot less money to travel on and those who can afford wont probably choose Cambodia/Sihanoukville.

would love to know the average amount of people in Shianoukville at a time(locals, travellers, temp migrants), as it looks empty and painfully over developed, also feels dangerous in that and with out proper maintenance those shittly constructed buildings are going crumble, then there's the Chinese gangsters.

Doesn't make sense, when they aren't scared of them in their own country. Chinese tourists are being scared off by Chinese gangsters who are in an environment where they can do whatever they want with no consequences (except of course for the Cambodian economy).

How is banning the movie here supposed to help? The damage is already done.

Good question. You'd think the Chinese watch it or have watched it before even coming to Cambodia, and then decide not to come. Banning the movie in Cambodia is pretty nonsensical.

banning anything, only makes it more desirable;

PLUS its the chinese watching it and deciding not to visit Cambodia.
NOT the khmers
