Tanker Hits Bus as Brakes Fail on Pich Nil Slope
Cambodia News, (Kampong Speu): A man died instantly on the spot, while 13 others were seriously injured in a traffic accident caused by the failed brakes of a Tela gas tanker of Tela Company driving down Pich Nil slope on National Road 4 while it was raining. The truck was traveling downhill when the driver lost control of his vehicle and ploughed into a Vibol passenger bus which was traveling in the opposite direction, causing it to overturn into a ditch.
One passenger, a Vietnamese man, was killed outright, and four men and nine women passengers were injured in the accident. This incident happened at 11:30am on August 31, 2023 on National Road No. 4, Pich Nil slope, between km 103-104, Village 6, Yeay Mao Pich Nil Commune, Kampong Speu Province.
After the incident, the accident victims were taken to the hospital for treatment, while the body of the deceased was taken by the police to be handed over to the family. The truck driver ran away from the accident scene, and police impounded the vehicles.

MPWT could do a lot worse than bring in all these trucks for an annual roadworthiness check. Absurd to see all the new cars/barely used cars going through the motions at the MPWT test centre, and yet daily I see trucks with no brake lights, no brakes, no lights in general, and a driver who can never have passed a driving test in his 17 year old life. The quality is driving is bad enough in the KoW, without having vehicles that simply are not roadworthy on top. Plus some absurd road design/lack of junction signs, etc.

Don’t get off your bike. You surely don’t want a nanny state like Australia.

Damn. Even if the driver ran away, we know that the tanker truck was part of the Tela company transport system, and as such, the owner of the business is normally held liable for the state of his vehicles and machinery. So that should not mean that OKHNA Chhun On, Chairman & CEO, can pay out a few thousand dollars to the eleven families of the dead and injured, and the deadly trucks can resume business as usual. It should not mean that, but it probably does.
Anyway, here's a message from OKHNA Chhun On, Chairman & CEO of Tela, addressed to all the happy customers that have to deal with his trucks on the roads of Cambodia. https://tela.com.kh/company/

AND here are some Top Road Safety Tips from Tela: https://tela.com.kh/A Message from the CEO
On behalf of Kampuchea Tela Co., Ltd (Tela), I would like to express my gratitude and respect to all of our valued customers and partners for their continued support.
Owing to their solid cooperation and support, we at Tela have been able to grow during the past 25 years to become Cambodia’s largest petroleum distributor and supplier, creating jobs and thus significantly contributing to the country’s national economic growth.
Under the Commercial Law of the Royal Government of Cambodia, Tela was initially established as an import and export company, dealing with petroleum products in response to the growing needs and demands of the Cambodian market, contributing to the Kingdom’s fast-growing economy.
Establishing and operating a business of this magnitude is challenging. It requires timely and savvy business strategies and commitment to induce performance and sustainable growth. Over the last two decades our company has been working tirelessly to meet and adhere to international standards, by equipping and upgrading our technical facilities, products and customer service as well as capacity in our human resources.
While we understand the importance of financial sustainability as an enterprise, we also recognise the importance of protecting our environment for the wellbeing of future Cambodian generations. Owing to our commitment to environmentally-friendly operations, Tela was awarded the prestigious ISO 9001:2008.
Finally, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Tela, I would like to extend my gratitude to our management team for their dedication and outstanding performance to date, with the clearly defined vision of serving our customers for another 25 years and more as the industry’s leader in Cambodia, I anticipate your continued support and cooperation.
Sincerely yours,
OKHNA Chhun On
Chairman & CEO
