Police say that an Italian woman, found hanging from a flagpole in Kampot, committed suicide after a drinking session

The woman’s body was found on the morning of August 26, 2023 at Prek Bay Bay 1 Villagem Sangkat Kampong Kandal, Kampot City

The deceased has been named as Giulia Tonelli, a 27 year old Italian national

Major General Mao Chanthurith, Kampot Provincial Police Commissioner stated that at 6:15 a.m. on August 26, local police received a report from a passenger about the discovery of the body of a foreign woman hanging in Kampong Bay.

Immediately after receiving this information, the specialized officer arrived at the destination and transported the body to the Provincial Referral Hospital for an autopsy.

Major General Mao Chanthurith stated that, according to the security camera video near the scene, at around 3 am on August 26, the woman was seen walking towards the flagpole and then hanged herself from it

He added that a friend of the woman explained that, before the incident, the victim had drunk alcohol at a foreign restaurant near the scene from early evening until 12 midnight

After an examination, the forensic officer confirmed that there were no noticeable marks on the body and that the victim committed suicide.
