Fire by Candlelight Damaged Pagoda Paintings
Cambodia News(Kandal): A fire broke out in a pagoda area due to the negligence of the monks, who had carelessly left burning candles unattended. The authorities and local citizens were quick to respond to extinguish the fire, which was discovered at 4:45am on 16 August 2023 in the Sdao Ampil Dam Tuek village of Vihear Luong commune, Ponhea Leu district, Kandal province.
Fortunately, the fire did not spread to nearby houses, and there were no injuries. However, there was some material damage to the pagoda, including ceiling, wall, and floor paintings and religious decorations.
According to Colonel Phan Vanny, Director of the Fire Prevention and Extinguishing Office of Kandal Provincial Police, the Ponhea Leu district police intervened to extinguish the fire using a fire truck and it was extinguished by 5:10am on 16 August.
