My computer has been bugged. Again.

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. My computer has been bugged. Again.

Post by rgrowden »

Couple of days ago I turned on the laptop. After a minute, little ants started crawling out of it- dozens of them. Happens once a year here, lasts for a week, then they're gone for another year. Only happens in Cambodia. Much as I respect the Khmer take on all life being sacred, these buggers BITE! So I'm a mass killer for a week a year. Anyone have this problem? I assume they breed inside, maybe eat glue or something edible that the computer is made of. A small thing, but I figured I'd throw it out there.

Damn, lol, take it to a shop to get cleaned out. Surely they'll cause long-term problems with your computer if they stay in there, breeding and shitting, and maybe nibbling on random circuits.

Have you spilled anything on it? Especially anything sweet. You may have been lucky that it was just a few drops that managed to evade anything critical inside the laptop, but may have left a residue that attracts the ants?

And crumbs. Especially if the kids are tampering.

Haha I’ve experienced the same in Cambodia. I just squished them all.
Despite what angsta states, it’s clear from reading through his posts that angsta supports the free FreePalestine movement.

Ants do not like copper and will not cross a wire. Not sure if it works with all ants but you could try to ring-fence off the laptop with a copper wire on the table around it when not in use. Or copper coins. I think I have read on CEO the trick using baking soda for the same purpose works. YMMV!

Thanks for the suggestions. Turned it on today, no ants - for another year.

If you buy a stun gun from Central Market ($10) and use it on the frame of your PC, the shock will kill them all in an instant.

It might be a good idea to unplug it first.

My guess is they eat the thermal paste.
