Re: Why do many physical violent attacks on tourists happen much more often in Thailand compared to Cambodia?
Yonks ago I worked as a Tourist Police Volunteer in Phuket. I was actually based at the airport but had to patrol in Soi Bangla on Friday and Saturday nights. I lost count of the number of times that I had to intervene to stop Thais kicking (or continuing to kick) the cr*p out of a foreign tourist. Perhaps surprisingly, the Thais always heeded my request to stop trying to kill the tourist - I never had to use force (bit difficult when on my own or with 1 partner!!).
In every case, I deemed the foreign tourist to be at fault >>> drunk, abusive, trying to pick a fight, refusing to pay a bar bill, sexually assaulting a bar girl etc.

Thais are just naturally volatile and prone to savage outbursts of violence. They have coups there every couple of months.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Numbeo doesn't use any sort of crime statistics or any actual legit information. It's a survey website anyone can go in and do surveys to alter crime rates in given countries/cities.ego bibere nimis wrote: ↑Sun Aug 13, 2023 9:46 amThe statistics do not support your hypothesis - well at least these stats dont:Laotiangirl wrote: ↑Sun Aug 13, 2023 6:40 am I am aware of the fact that Thailand attracts far more international tourists compared to Cambodia. 10x the tourists you're going to have 10x the issues. But I think culture also plays a huge role. Then there's the fact that the Thais have their own tourist police. Let me explain events I observed in Thailand:
Drunken foreign idiot in Thailand picks a fight in a bar. He gets the crap kicked out of him. He reports it to the tourist police. Words are said, and the police side with the Thais. I am sure this stuff happens in Cambodia as well but I think this type of violent attacks towards tourists happens far more often in Thailand and Cambodia. I've seen this violence happen in Thailand on a regular basis whereas this type of aggression is not as common as Thailand in Cambodia.
I think this is a cultural thing. This is based on my personal experiences anyway.

And for a fact 90% of tourists and expats have no clue about the dark side of Thailand. Our very high gun violence, mass shootings and stabbings. Random murders. Robberies. And such.

Thais are known to be very tolerant...particularly in regards to oafish behaviour of foreigners. Plus they have the desire to please and not upset/disappoint others or lose face. Probably why they mostly see farangs as uncultured barbarians.John Bingham wrote: ↑Mon Aug 14, 2023 12:20 am Thais are just naturally volatile and prone to savage outbursts of violence. However, with their poker faces and smiles, their true feelings and emotions are not revealed and repressed. Until of course they are pushed to the limit and the dam breaks. Hence the theory that when all these repressed emotions are released, they can cause excessive outbursts of anger and violence.

Political, economic and ideological factors caused the society to polarize into socialist-minded left, and conservative and royalist right camps.
Sounds exactly like what's going on in the States right now. Will we ever learn?

I imagine that we will but, eventually we forget and need to learn it again.
