2 Thais Arrested in Cross-Border Drug Bust, Netting 465 Kilos of Meth
Cambodia News: The Ministry of Interior's Anti-drug Department, in collaboration with the Phnom Penh Police and Phnom Penh municipal deputy prosecutor Vong Savath, successfully carried out a sophisticated operation resulting in the seizure of more than 465kg of methamphetamine. This crackdown operation led to the arrest of two Thai nationals.
After an intensive investigation spanning over two months, law enforcement officers conducted raids at two locations in the capital city of Phnom Penh. The targeted areas were in the districts of Dangkor and Sen Sok.
Authorities disclosed that the seized drugs had entered Cambodia from Laos and were destined for an undisclosed location. The magnitude of this drug haul underscores the ongoing battle against cross-border drug trafficking.
Saelee Chaloemrat and Saeyang Thavon, the two suspects apprehended during the operation, are currently in custody. Efforts are underway to prepare the necessary legal cases for their court proceedings.
Furthermore, in a symbolic gesture to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26, authorities in Banteay Meanchey province destroyed over 3kg of illegal drugs. These drugs had been seized across three provinces, and their destruction aimed to emphasize the theme of "People first: stop stigma and discrimination, strengthen prevention."
The event, which drew approximately 1,595 attendees including local authorities, students, and curious members of the public, was officiated by Neak Yuthea, the deputy secretary-general of the National Authority for Combating Drugs, and Um Reatrey, the provincial governor of Banteay Meanchey.
Cambodian authorities remain committed to combatting the illicit drug trade, prioritizing the safety and well-being of its citizens.
