Fishmarket Kampot is closing

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

No, why? Do you have any real evidence that they're doing a poor job picking locations? I think it's just a reflection of your dislike of them / their product.

Whenever I've been to a Starbucks in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap or Sihanoukville, it was at least reasonably busy, so I have no reason to believe that they don't know their shit. If they believe it's time to enter Kampot, I can imagine who they think their target group will be, and it isn't expats.

There was a similar thread on ThaiVisa recently about their expansion plans in Thailand. The old goats were busy bleating as expected, meanwhile young Thais can't seem to get enough (for all the wrong reasons of course, but it is what it is).

Thailand, i can understand, lots of young thais and a huge middle class want to be seen in a starbucks and can afford it
As there no uni's in Kampot and not a large middle class, PLUS the local population is not flush with cash like PP or SR>
add in local expats are not the kind that would go to starbucks>
My opinion of course

So you lived in Kep, went to Kampot weekly for shopping, but in your opinion, Kampot doesn't have a university. That's funny.

As for Starbucks, let's just wait and see what will happen. If I understood Hanno correctly, they just surveyed the place - maybe they'll come to the same conclusion as you.

There are like 20k-30k middle class Phnom Penhers visiting Kampot/Kep weekly. I'm sure they are the main target clientele. Not the 50cents expat beer crowd. On other note, Brown Coffee opens later this year in Kampot as well. Brown coffee in Sihanoukville is making killing. It's totally packed every weekend and weekdays after 3pm.

Starbucks is also an international chain with an opaque mix of licensees, joint-ventures and owned locations. Has been under investigation by tax authorities worldwide, eg secret arrangements with the Dutch government, crackdown in the UK after it came to light that they had not paid any tax for years, NTS of South Korea investigating. Payment of high IP related fees to transfer profits around the world in order to pay the least in some tax-haven.

https://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/biz/20 ... 90673.html

That enables creative bean-counters to set up loss-leading locations that get 'paid' with untaxed profits made elsewhere. Picture is a Lamborghini Urus parked in front of Kampot's market (I wanted to use a pic once made of a cavalcade of Mercedes G63s and Lexus LX570s parked in front of Fish Market restaurant but could not locate it).

I should have said "Is Gloria Jean's Coffee opening another coffee shop in Kep?" I recently saw the Gloria Jean's Coffee sign on the fence at the new development next to Kep beachside and assumed that it was to be a new location....

They have signs all over Kep. Those are just promoting the existing location.
