Well common knowledge (or taste buds) would tell us that Thai food is good because it balances flavours well. It's true that Thailand has a very aggressive food tourism industry that paints its food as better than it is. But there is the aforementioned pride in the food there. Another thing I've noticed, in VN as well, is how much hard work and time the food takes to make, much more developed and intricate than the cuisine here which is mostly stir-fries, grills, soups, that just have everything thrown in. Cambodians don't like to spend much time in the kitchen, which is good because food comes quick. But there is an objective reason why Cambodian food is not famous and the government is so thin-skinned about it.

The other thing is that you have to remember that people on the verge of starvation were murdered here just for digging up potatoes under Pol Pot; so there is a very important value added to any food, and Cambodians grateful to have it.

Also the Youtuber I understand is from Malaysia, which in itself to me has a diabolically bad cuisine. All dishes seem to have started out as an attempt to cook Chinese food, only to realise it has been botched, so they add a pile of Indian spices to rescue it. Then add half a boiled egg on top as an afterthought. Back at you Uncle Roger!!

Cambodians hardly seem to preserving their traditional cuisine. Clearly obsessed with western fast-food.

I like quite a few Khmer dishes. Cooked by someone who knows what they are doing and using quality ingredients, Khmer food really doesn't need to be bad. I do get the impression that Khmers generally aren't exactly foodies though, compared with let's say Thais or Vietnamese they don't seem to give eating well that much importance. And I mean those who could actually afford it, it just doesn't seem that high on their list of priorities while many Thais talk about nothing else.

I don't know about that. I remember having parties and the family would spend days preparing food grinding up ingredients. The average food in a local cafe is crap but it's a lot different when someone knows what they are doing.

Of the popular Southeast Asian cuisines I have tried regularly, my order of preference is: 1. Thai. 2. Indonesian. 3. Vietnamese. 4. Malaysian/Singaporean. 5. Cambodian. Of course it's subjective.

can add in Asia?
1. Thai, 2. Indian, 3. Malaysian, 4. Nepali, 5. Indonesian
only Vietnamese food I've had is Pho, cooked by a Vietnamese wife of a friend of mine

Cambodian doesn't cut it for me, even if its home cooking

Amok for example apparently hails from Vietnam (although I admittedly haven't looked into it too deeply, don't cancel me :shock: ). And I have never seen a Khmer family cook Amok at home.
Amok is something I've only ever seen in Cambodia, and then at restaurants that specialise in royal cuisine, but then I imagine it is never cooked at home the same way Scots rarely ever eat haggis despite it being the officially designated national dish.

Also, I would like to add (as controversial as this may be) is that all of the regional cuisine in the continuum from Thailand to Southern Vietnam is generally very similar, much the way most of Northern Europe eats variations on mashed root vegetables and roasted meat or sausauge, e.g the cuisines of Germany and Poland are remarkably similar, despite the huge cultural differences between the two, much like how Thailand and Cambodia both have localised versions of the same standardised dishes with changes in nomenclature (e.g, "Pad Thai' is "mee chaa" in Cambodia; "Larb moo" is "laab sach jrouk", etc.).

The one dish that I can think of (which is essentially Cambodia's real national dish if based purely on daily consumption alone) is kuyteav dtuk, as Thai people use the same word (ก๋วยเตี๋ยว) as it is in Khmer, thus betraying a Cambodian origin)

Then again, I don't think Thai people eat Prahok Ktis either, so another notch in Cambodia's belt?
