Gift Ideas for visit to Cambodian family
Re: Gift Ideas for visit to Cambodian family
Says the guy who spends $20,000 on a case of "food poisoning". Give me a break, will ya.newkidontheblock wrote: ↑Wed Jul 26, 2023 8:54 pm 5000 Riel note for each child and 50,000 Riel notes for each adult?
In the provinces?
Was there an incredible rate of provincial inflation?
Last time it was 500 Riel notes for each child and 1000 Riel each adult.
Let's say I give 5000 riel each to 5 children and 50000 riel each to 5 adults. That's 275,000 riel, still a lot less than a night out in Phnom Penh. Time spent on shopping, zero. Happy faces, 10.

Giving dimes and quarters as gifts? Even a cripple who lives on an arid hill in Oddar Meanchey would be insulted by such a meager offering.newkidontheblock wrote: ↑Wed Jul 26, 2023 8:54 pm 5000 Riel note for each child and 50,000 Riel notes for each adult?

Of course it was followed by taking them to pizza/restaurant. So I guess it works out.

Giving 50.000 to all adults is way too much. You go in the countryside, if you want to give a 50.000 note, give it to the grandpa.
Small money to the kids, gifts for the adults (fruits and desserts) and buy a case of beers for conviviality.

You're being laughed at, but you're right. 5000r for each kid is a bit much, in the boonies they can buy a (small) bag of snacks for 500r. So the gift equates to 10 snacks. Don't forget the word will spread soon and before you know it all the village kids will come to collect 'their' 5k.newkidontheblock wrote: ↑Wed Jul 26, 2023 8:54 pm 5000 Riel note for each child and 50,000 Riel notes for each adult?

Daily wage is in the boonies typically 20-30 k. So 50 k for each adult is also pretty steep.
I think OP should differentiate between the adults in the family he's staying with, and the others. For the others just bring some food to sample, or buy a case of beer. For the family he's staying with he'd have to differentiate between the adults. The adult daughter for instance should get less than the in-living grandfather. 50k as the highest gift is more than acceptable.

Ages ago when we visited the family in svay rieng, i gave my partner $50
left it up to her to do what she thought best<
why would I, as a Barang, know or want to get involved?

I think the actual amounts which are considered appropriate depend a lot on the standard of living of the family in question. Your snack example is great, some kids are usesd to (and happy with) that 500 riel snack you mentioned no doubt, others buy bags of potato chips that cost a few thousand riel each.Kammekor wrote: ↑Thu Jul 27, 2023 7:09 amYou're being laughed at, but you're right. 5000r for each kid is a bit much, in the boonies they can buy a (small) bag of snacks for 500r. I don't quite get your distinction between "the family" and "the others", why would YOU ever give anything direcrly to the latter? Assuming you aren't Santa Claus, you give to the family you visit, so THEY buy something to get a party going and then of course others usually come over and join in.

Thanks. I thought I had seen them somewhere but searched Lucky's yesterday and no luck. Next time I'll be prepared!
