Stop trying to have the perfect vacation

Yeah, that place out 'there'. Anything not really Cambodia related should go here.

Stop trying to have the perfect vacation

Post by phuketrichard »

when i fist started travelling, there was no internet, no google, no google maps,
there was Europe on $5 ( can you imagine you could do Europe on $5!!)

than the yellow bible

came out the year before i did Amsterdam to Bangkok
But basically travelling was asking other travelers coming from where your heading, all the questions the internet now answers

NOW there is to much out there and it spoils the trip when all your doing is going where everyone has gone before AND posting a selfie

twitter, Tik Tok, Instagram
It’s sort of a cliché to remark that Americans make bad tourists, but on the other hand, it’s hard to argue with the evidence. In the past week, two videos of American tourists complaining about Europe have gone viral: In one, a traveler says that Paris “smells like piss, cheese, and armpit” and that its food “looks grimy as hell,” and in the other, a woman argues that any influencer who posted pretty photos of the Amalfi Coast “deserves jail time” because they neglected to mention the logistics of actually getting there. “This is literal manual labor not vacation,” she writes in the caption. I’m not going to add to the chorus of Twitter users sending death threats to these two, because in a sense, they’ve both got points: If you go to Europe just because it looks cute on TikTok and Instagram, you’re going to end up disappointed.

Is travel cringe? It certainly feels that way, particularly if you’re traveling to one of the destinations that have become symbols of internet-driven over-tourism — Tulum, Lisbon, Reykjavik, Mexico City, Santorini, Dubrovnik, to name a few from the past decade. These are cities boasting both extraordinary natural beauty and, crucially, governments and corporations eager to profit from tourism. In catering to Western tastes, developers and the dollars they seek aren’t only killing the existing culture, they’re also, ironically, killing what makes people want to visit a place. In the latest edition of his Barcelona guide, the legendary travel author Rick Steves writes a eulogy for the Ramblas, a thriving market for locals that’s since become a tourist trap selling souvenirs and Instagram-ready fruit skewers.

If you enjoy noise pollution and obnoxious driving practices, Phnom Penh is the place for you!

I feel a Monty Python skit coming on..."You lucky, lucky bastard! You had $5 a day!" etc etc

Guess what. Nobody forces you to do any of that.

I find Phuket Richard to be the best poster on the forum. Why so many "long time" contributors seem to hate on you is beyond me.

Nearly all his posts are informstive and keep us all abreast of current events and help contextualize past events into present day reality.

I, for one, and countless others who are too intimidated by ad hominems, are grateful.

PR deserves a medal and 30 percent of gross revenues from CEO😊.

Those things didn't exist when I started traveling a couple of decades later. Some friends gave me a Lonely Planet and a Rough Guide when I went to India/ Nepal in 1996. They were too heavy so I just tore out the pages I wanted and threw the rest away.

lonely planet maps were great ( still are)
as is the history, local info
when i cycled India in 82/83 the India guide helped a lot, but as John, i ripped out the pages as i used them :-)

still the best/most up to date info is from someone coming the other way :-)

When I first started to travel, Phileas Fogg had long since been played by David Niven, and Jules Verne, while not compulsory, was certainly encouraged reading.

I’m actually in agreement, somewhat. I enjoy discovery, a little mystery. Although many colleagues just want familiarity and ample supply.
It’s not unfair suggesting that the internet provides so many answers, too many, and a lot of misdirection.

When not banging the ThaiToorismDrum, PKR provides many an informative gem, as do quite a few longer term CEO contributors.

I met last year at the IRAN-PAK border a Belgian cycler and we where escorted together by the Levies to Quetta and later to D.I. Khan, he left Paris 5 months before and travelled on a budget from 10 dollars a day !! His final destination was HANOI, and he did make it to Hanoi, i suppose he flew from Kathmandu to Bangkok because of Myanmar (i shipped my car from Mumbai to KL). He is still around somewhere, but as i dont have Instagram no idea where he is hanging out now (look for Clement Nothomb). I am pretty sure 40 years ago live was easier on 5 dollar then now on 10 dollar, wouldnt it ?? !!

I wonder whether pre internet there was a greater % of people taking package tours than they are now. My gut feel is yes. Although there were travel bibles like Lonely Planet Thailand, Philippines, Cambodia et al for more adventurous travellers, many preferred the comfort of all pre arranged. Nowadays, I'm wondering whether many first time travellers just book their airfare, hotels and even tours online themselves ..
