Cambodia News (Phnom Penh): The Department of Technology Crimes, together with competent forces from the Phnom Penh Municipal Police and with the approval of Mr. Seng Heang, Deputy Prosecutor of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, apprehended three suspects who were threatening victims of a loan company, at Borey Peng Huoth, Boeung Sno, Sangkat Chbar Ampov, Phnom Penh.

During questioning, the suspects confessed to working as agents for an unlicensed online lending company. They acted for lenders to retrieve debts, often resorting to threats against those who failed to repay their loans on time. However, the authorities discovered that these loan companies were unlicensed and did not obtain permission to operate from the National Bank of Cambodia.

On the morning of 11 July 2023, the department transferred the three suspects to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court for legal action, and to continue searching for the ringleader and accomplices in this illegal loan operation.

On 23 January 2023, a joint announcement was made by the General Commissioner of the National Police and the National Bank of Cambodia, stating that strict legal action would be taken against illegal lending and financial services in all forms.

The joint statement also advised the population to avoid borrowing from informal financial service providers without the permission of the National Bank and to assist authorities in taking timely legal action.
