Re: it's tough to argue pot should be 100% illegal.
I would like to introduce some actual figures into the discussion. There are a lot of estimates and guesses so far. Portugal has been very successful in combating drug abuse after decriminalizing possession of small amounts of any narcotic. Perhaps AD would like to counter with an example showing that criminalization, and the war on drugs as a whole, is successful.
http://content.time.com/time/health/art ... 46,00.html"Judging by every metric, decriminalization in Portugal has been a resounding success," says Glenn Greenwald, an attorney, author and fluent Portuguese speaker, who conducted the research. "It has enabled the Portuguese government to manage and control the drug problem far better than virtually every other Western country does."
Compared to the European Union and the U.S., Portugal's drug use numbers are impressive. Following decriminalization, Portugal had the lowest rate of lifetime marijuana use in people over 15 in the E.U.: 10%. The most comparable figure in America is in people over 12: 39.8%. Proportionally, more Americans have used cocaine than Portuguese have used marijuana.
The Cato paper reports that between 2001 and 2006 in Portugal, rates of lifetime use of any illegal drug among seventh through ninth graders fell from 14.1% to 10.6%; drug use in older teens also declined. Lifetime heroin use among 16-to-18-year-olds fell from 2.5% to 1.8% (although there was a slight increase in marijuana use in that age group). New HIV infections in drug users fell by 17% between 1999 and 2003, and deaths related to heroin and similar drugs were cut by more than half. In addition, the number of people on methadone and buprenorphine treatment for drug addiction rose to 14,877 from 6,040, after decriminalization, and money saved on enforcement allowed for increased funding of drug-free treatment as well.
Twelve years ago, Portugal eliminated criminal penalties for drug users. Since then, those caught with small amounts of marijuana, cocaine or heroin go unindicted and possession is a misdemeanor on par with illegal parking. Experts are pleased with the results.
http://www.spiegel.de/international/eur ... 91060.htmlOne gram of heroin, two grams of cocaine, 25 grams of marijuana leaves or five grams of hashish: These are the drug quantities one can legally purchase and possess in Portugal, carrying them through the streets of Lisbon in a pants pocket, say, without fear of repercussion. MDMA -- the active ingredient in ecstasy -- and amphetamines -- including speed and meth -- can also be possessed in amounts up to one gram. That's roughly enough of each of these drugs to last 10 days.
These are the amounts listed in a table appended to Portugal's Law 30/2000. Goulão participated in creating this law, which has put his country at the forefront of experimental approaches to drug control. Portugal paved a new path when it decided to decriminalize drugs of all kinds.
"We figured perhaps this way we would be better able get things under control," Goulão explains. "Criminalization certainly wasn't working all that well."

I'm also for decriminalization. Drug related crime rates could decrease, drugs would be cleaner and safer and it would safe governments billions of Dollars. But, if you look at Amsterdam it didn't work out that well - the government also took it extremely easy and you couldn't walk the streets anymore without getting robbed by some junkie.BOFH wrote:I would like to introduce some actual figures into the discussion. my Opinion,
less than 5 years 40 of the 50 states in America will be like Oregon & Colorado.
Note the statement "looking for a healthy alternative to alcohol"Starting today, July 1st, you can now legally grow cannabis in Spain. This is massive news for medical growers, patients and those looking for a healthy alternative to alcohol.
There is one restriction, and that is you still can’t openly grow in a place that is viewable from a public space.
