Cambodia News, (Kandal): Whole families in Stung Chrov Village found themselves suddenly homeless when at least four houses collapsed with the riverbank into the river, while other homeowners were forced to relocate for fear of falling into the river following further rainfall. The riverbank at the point in Takhmao city began collapse on 1 July, although there have been some small landslides over the past year, that warned of things to come. But the people had been living there for a long time and there had been no serious damage to the buildings.

Sivana, one of four homeowners whose home collapsed into the river, said they had lived on the riverbank for between 10 and 30 years and had never experienced such a tragedy. She said that on the night of July 2, 2023, the entire house collapsed into the river, but due to the intervention of the authorities as well as some help from the neighbors, they were able to recover some of their possessions.

Mr. HIM Chhon, Chief of Stung Chrov Village, said that in 2022, six houses collapsed due to landslides on the riverbank, but not as severe as now. This year, from the end of June to the beginning of July, due to daily rain and strong currents from the treatment plant at Choeung Ek Lake, 4 houses have collapsed into the river and another one will have to be demolished if the rain continues.

The village chief also confirmed that he had already reported the above case to the commune and city hall, and last year, the provincial governor also called on the people along the river to stop the construction of new buildings. He also urged the people who have houses on the banks of the river to be very careful, because the river bank is sandy soil, and now it is the rainy season, when there is heavy rain, the ground may slip and collapse if nothing is done. If you feel in danger, please leave the house immediately and report the situation to the authorities.
