Kep or Kampot?

Missus and the kids are coming over next week and want to head to the coast. I haven't been to either Kep or Kampot for 10 years and expect that it has changed a lot.

Which destination would be better? The kids want the beach obviously, but it also comes down to accommodation and food. I stayed at the Veranda years ago and liked it, but not sure what it is like now.

Any hotel and/or restaurant recommendations?

Lots of questions, but any pointers would be very much appreciated.

Both have plenty of options for places to stay from $20-100's/night
Kep has no nightlife still and restaurant choices are limited outside of the seafood ones near the crab market and the new overpriced one on the beach near the sailing club, ( which has a good food)
Kampot has night market area, lots of restaurants ( maybe a khmer/seafood meal on one of the river boats down from the old bridge?) and bars, which i am sure are useless to you>

If you stay in Kampot get a place on the river, fellow mtn biker friend of mine owns Villa Vedici which is a great place to stay with kids
if you have transport, a day trip to Kep and up to Bokor would be fine

try and avoid the weekends when kep gets crowded

I hear B Resort in Kampot is good.

Depends on your budget. If you have money to spent, I think better quality available in Kep. Both food and accommodation wise.

Kampot has far more options so it's easy to find great budget options too.

My personal favourites in Kampot are Amber and Villa Vedici. In Kep Saravoan, Samanea, Veranda and Knai Bang Chatt all are very good.

If beach is requirement then obviosly Kep is only option out of those two, though my personal choice in that case would be Sihanoukville. Better beaches and lot of things to do for kids.

Kampot has a beach these days (close to the salt fields), not much of a tropical feel but it has sand. There also seems to be a new one under development closer to town.

Thank you for that. Budget is not that much of an issue. What is there to do in Sihanoukville? I have been twice in the last 4 weeks and didn't really find much for adults to do, never mind kids.

Depends on whether you are into abudctions, extortion and street executions of Chinese people - if so, just wear all black outfit, drive a black Lexus/Range Rover for the day & join in!

Else, avoid above said activities is probably the best thing to do in Sihanouville!

Joking aside, if the restaurant at the far end of Sokha Beach is still there, it is worth some dinner/cocktails, etc. Think Metro on the beach. But I haven't been since the invasion, so can't be sure sorry.

Is there any decent beach resort in Cambodia that doesn't require going to the islands and faffing about with boats and dragging cases along a beach?

Sihanoukville should be thriving with the new road getting you there (in relative safety) within 3 hours, but nobody seems to have a good word to say about the place. Is it really that fucked up?

In fact, is there anywhere you can even fly to from PP that lands you at a beach resort? The PP to Koh Samui and Phuket routes didn't last long and doesn't bode well for other choices being offered in the near future.
