Why So Many Chinese Kids Wear Glasses

Yeah, that place out 'there'. Anything not really Cambodia related should go here.

"But you concede that 30% could be genetic and the rest acquired?" Yup, but we're talking a 270% increase here.

Many people don't realize they're losing their eyesight unless it's pointed out to them or they get regular tests, so I'm not sure I believe the accuracy of the parents' statistic.

So you believe that 80% of Chinese teens have always been myopic then ?

I was 4 when I got my glasses, although granted I am not Chinese but close enough according to some Americans. Reason for me though is because I am fairly bad for eye sight (-6.75 left and -5.50 right) and I couldn't see my friends faces at school without squinting, so they told me I needed "help".

Re: parents reporting the statistic though, some of my friends couldn't see the chalkboard in class, but they didn't care nor did they tell their parents about it because they didn't want to get checked until they were old enough to wear contacts. Some where also myopic, but weren't bad enough to need glasses as well.

I see few Khmer wearing specs. A few I know have a pair of cheaters for small print. Curious.

I know tons of Khmers who should be wearing glasses but don't. Many don't know that they should be able to read that signage 10 meters away, while others just don't want to wear them, or don't have the cash.

Remember that wearers of glasses were some of the first rounded up by the KR.

I've heard this quite often, but have never seen credible sources which relate this. Not sure if it's true or one of those myths that's been inaccurately propagated.

Texts by a number if Khmer and western writers that were here during the PP regime state it - the association is "need glasses = able to read = educated, therefore enemy of the state."
