Thailand elections: Polls open with Thaksin's daughter as frontrunner

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Thailand elections: move forward party wins

Post by phuketrichard »

a good writeup
personally i am still hopeful

Pita Limjaroenrat is not your typical Thai politician.

Image
In a country where the average age of cabinet ministers is 65, where unquestioning deference to elders is still a  cherished tradition, his youth - he looks far younger than his 42 years - and unabashed confidence make him stand out.

That he is, after a shock election result which put his reformist Move Forward party ahead of all the others, poised to become the youngest prime minister in 78 years, has stunned the conservative political establishment which has dominated Thailand for much of the modern era.

Difficult negotiations are now under way to form a coalition government with Pheu Thai, the second largest party, which has won every election held in Thailand since 2001, and had been expected to win the latest, held on 14 May.

Both Pheu Thai and Move Forward consider themselves to be progressive, opposed to military interference in politics like the 2014 coup, which deposed a Pheu Thai administration.

But the young activists of Move Forward outmanoeuvred the older party, and beat many of its candidates, with an imaginative, social media-based campaign offering voters a complete break with the past, and a different kind of political leadership.

"I'm different," Pita tells me. "We are not getting into a coalition to pursue a quick fix, or to get me the prime ministership. I'm in government for the people. The world has changed.

"You don't have to be a strong man, with toxic masculinity, to make sure 'people have to listen to me, and I have to be the one in the spotlight all the time'.

"I don't have to be perfect all the time. I can just be like a regular human being here in Thailand, riding motorcycles, eating on the streets like any other people."

As the heir presumptive to the Prime Ministership, I assume (hope) he has a full security detail. This guy sounds like such a threat to the ruling establishment and their privileged lifestyle, the 'lone nut' solution must be tempting to a lot of people.

just in:
knew this would happen:

The new coalition government being formed by the Move Forward Party is set to reshape – if not reverse – Thailand legalization of marijuana.
As soon as the new government takes office, it will relist marijuana as a narcotic, according to Dr Wayo Assawarungruang, who sits on Move Forward’s public-health working panel.

“The move will enable the strict control of marijuana affairs,” said Wayo, who was elected as a Move Forward party-list MP.

“But we will of course also issue regulations to temporarily protect the interests of marijuana-related businesses that have sprung into operation legally. We will give them time to adjust to the new landscape.”
.....
Marijuana market to shrink by 70%
Wayo said that once marijuana is put back on the narcotics list, about 70% of marijuana stalls and shops will be wiped out. Expected to be gone right away are online cannabis shops and roadside stalls on Khaosan Road. He said the businesses are operating today only because legal loopholes exist. Since removing marijuana from the narcotics list, Thailand has yet to pass a specific law controlling its use.

“We will pass laws to govern the 30% of shops that will remain,” Wayo said.

Good news: now lets see what the generals throw at him to keep him out

Thailand’s Election Commission (EC) has resolved unanimously to dismiss three complaints filed against Move Forward party leader Pita Limjaroenrat, accusing him of holding 42,000 shares in iTV, a media company.

Image

BUT:
However, Pita has a new and significant obstacle in his quest to become Thailand’s next Prime Minister as the Election Commission stated that they would proceed with an investigation into if Pita knowingly competed for PM while having the media shares and was aware that it could be a violation of Thai law, as well as Move Forward Party regulations.

Therefore, the issue is no longer the holding of the shares but rather if Pita knowingly competed.

If found guilty, Pita could face significant prison time and be disqualified.

Highly intelligent people predicted this scenario years ago.

Fortunately, Thai politics doesn't affect foreigners.

good read from Andrew

Image
Move Forward shocked the Thai establishment with its unexpected victory, winning 14.4 million party list votes, representing 38 percent of the electorate. The party performed remarkably well in Bangkok, winning 32 of the capital’s 33 constituencies. Overall they won 151 seats. The result was all the more remarkable because unlike all other major parties, Move Forward did not engage in vote buying and bribery, and did not rely on patronage networks to win support.

In second place was Pheu Thai, which had been widely expected to win a landslide but ended up being eclipsed by Move Forward. Pheu Thai got 29 percent of party list votes cast, and fared well in constituency elections, giving it 141 seats.

Move Forward and Pheu Thai both campaigned on a platform of decisively ending the influence of the “uncles” who seized power in a coup in 2014 — Prayut Chan-ocha and Prawit Wongsuwan. Their combined party list vote share of 67 percent shows that an overwhelming majority of Thais — two thirds — have rejected the ruinous rule of the dinosaurs and want real democracy.
“Whatever happens now with Pita's premiership and Move Forward, Thailand clearly will never be the same again. The existing political order that dates back to the second half of the last century will come under increasing scrutiny and pressure for reform and change. The best outcome would be compromise and concession, allowing the military, monarchy and other traditional institutions to negotiate to keep some but not all of their prerogatives and privileges.”

He added: “With the writing on the wall, if the forces of the old order play for keeps, as in the past, this time they may risk losing everything as the forces for change from below and from across generations and past color-coded divides will continue to knock on their door.”

One thing is clear, whoever becomes prime minister — the dinosaurs are approaching extinction. It is just a matter of time.

Vote is tomorrow at 5 pm>

Things could be a bit dicey as those in power wont allow the move forward party a win, BUT if they dont accept the will of the people, all hell could break loose and worse than before
The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday decided to submit a petition to the Constitutional Court seeking the disqualification of PM-hopeful Pita Limjaroenrat over alleged media shareholding.

The EC is making the case for the Constitutional Court to disqualify Pita as MP under the Constitution’s Sections 98 (3) and 101 (6) for holding 42,000 shares in media firm, iTV.

The EC is also urging the the court to temporarily suspend Pita from serving as an MP until the court issues its ruling.
Move Forward party secretary-general has accused the Election Commission of acting suspiciously with its hasty decision to ask the Constitutional Court to consider party leader's iTV share-holding case, without giving Pita a chance to defend the case
Bangkok police have declared an area within 50 metres of the parliament building off-limits, in anticipation of a mass protest by supporters of the Move Forward party, who are expected to rally to offer moral support to Pita Limjaroenrat, the party leader, when parliament is scheduled to select Thailand’s 30th prime minister tomorrow (Thursday).

The announcement, signed by commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, Pol Lt-Gen Thiti Sangsawang, issued by virtue of the Public Assemblies Act, became effective at 6am this morning and lasts until midnight on July 15th.
#Thailand’s @MFPThailand urges all to gather in front of #parliament July 13. This as house supposed to vote for new PM. However, Constitutional Court today has also decided to consider case on whether @Pita_MFP
should be disqualified as MP for holding media shares #ศาลรัฐธรรมนูญ

Navy chief: "We are prepared to evacuate MPs and Senators from Parliament tomorrow if there is public disorder in the area."

Translation: "Pita won't be allowed to become PM."

Could this be another 1992

#Cambodia's PM HE: @Pita_MFP 's failure to get enough votes to be Thai prime minister is a major failure of the brute opposition in Cambodia.

sad day for Thailand democracy

Thailand facing renewed turmoil as the royalist and military establishment, through its unelected senators, overrules the people's will in the recent election by rejecting coalition candidate
@Pita_MFP for PM

Thailand’s parliament votes to reject progressive leader Pita Limjaroenrat as next prime minister
Pita Limjaroenrat, the leader of Thailand’s progressive Move Forward party, has failed to secure the required votes to become the next prime minister.

The 42-year-old was the only candidate nominated on Thursday after weeks of talks following Thailand’s 14 May general election, in which his left-wing alliance comfortably defeated conservative parties including that of the incumbent military-backed government.

But Mr Pita still faced a challenge in securing the required backing of more than half of the 749-member bicameral parliament, after a military-drafted change to the constitution meant that all 250 upper-house senators are chosen by the country’s generals.

A host of abstentions and votes against Mr Pita meant that it was clear he would fall short of the required 375 votes by some margin, while the final votes continued to be placed on Thursday evening.

Mr Pita secured 316 votes out of 737 names called during the parliamentary vote, just 51 votes short of the required number.

The parliament is expected to attempt another vote on 19 July, which Mr Pita can contest if nominated again. A third vote, if necessary, will be held a day later.
