This was my first thought, too, on my first reading of the story. However, look at the house. It's rather nice for an elderly couple. A wooden shack with a sheetsteel roof would be more fitting if the old lady did indeed die of starvation due to her inability to afford food. And the implication of stating she "died of starvation" draws one to the conclusion they were poor and destitute, which is probably not the case here.
What is more likely is the old lady simply gave up. Why didn't she tell her neighbours her husband had died? Why didn't she tell her daughter?

Or she was reliant on the man, maybe due to some mental/medical condition.
