Cambodian Women's Rugby Teams Kick Off
Australia Supports Young Women’s Rugby Development in Cambodia
AKP Phnom Penh, April 21, 2023 --
The Government of Australia is supporting youth women’s rugby development in Cambodia through a partnership with ChildFund, as the Kingdom readies itself to host the South-East Asian Games for the first time next month.
According to the Embassy of Australia in Cambodia, with support from ChildFund, the Cambodia Federation of Rugby (CFR) have officially launched two new women’s rugby clubs. The Phnom Penh Lotus Women’s Rugby Club and Battambang Rugby Club both have a youth focus with Under-16 and Under-20 teams. Another team, under CFR, the National Defence Rugby Association, was also launched.
H.E. Ms. Sum Sokha, CFR’s President, a two-star General and two-time South-East Games medallist, was joined by representatives from Australian and British embassies and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport for the occasion.
Since 2010, Australia has provided over AU$4 million to ChildFund in Cambodia through the Australian NGO Cooperation Programme to support projects in the child protection and education.
