Last time I was there, in late January, it was very busy. The music around there, especially from Temple Bar, is painfully loud. It must ruin a lot of business for other places nearby in the evenings.

Fact is it is no longer Pub Street but Temple Street. I was never a fan of Pub Street but I went a couple of weeks ago at my daughter's request. The volume of the music was brutal.

Instead of declaring the entire wider pub street area a party zone where loud music and partying is encouraged we get this bullshit Anything to keep SR a 2 day stop for tourist to come see the temples and leave again to more fun places, usually in Thailand, Vietnam or Philippines that have proper designated party areas.
Here's to hoping the big man in PP curbs the foolishness of our Governor as he had to in the past...

The only reason or time to go to pub street is a quiet time hopefully during a power outage

A designated party zone is a good idea. Its just a few roads in a big city. The booze tastes good after a hard day out seeing the temples.

If you want to spend a quiet or romantic evening in SR there is loads of other places you can go.

This is good news and in fact a rare display of sensible governance.

I agree that the Temple (hotel company) monopoly here is depressing. It seems they own not only all of Pub Street but apparently many of the smaller to medium sized hotels, so I’m guessing this wouldn’t have happened without their consent. So the people that run the tourism business here are now apparently (and sensibly) more concerned that temple goers get a decent night’s sleep and don’t leave one-star reviews than they are with the need to provide them with ear-shattering bass heavy dance music and screaming DJs at 4.30 am on a Wednesday morning. Presumably folks can continue on to Sihanoukville, the islands, Kampot or PP for that?

I live several km from Pub St. I find the night-time noise here more obtrusive than I ever did in PP. It seems it can come from any direction. The idea that this is bad for tourism is silly. People come here for temples. People get up early to go and see them. They can still enjoy a drink afterwards, but no one is going to cancel their visit because they read that the bars have to turn down the music at a reasonable hour (no one said they have to close). Also this is not just "barang" grumbling. I think these loud places are in fact aimed at foreigners rather than locals. I don't love the sound of the local karaoke joint but it usually quietens down by 10 pm. Same goes for the strip of night venues known as "Khmer Pub St" catering to locals that I used to live near... (behind Nat. Rd 6) going west from town.

Vang Vieng managed to be a destination of drunken mayhem and debauchery with the town shutting down at 11pm.
