Chinese Man Found Dead in Russey Keo Drain (Update: Arrests for Murder)

Cambodia News, (Phnom Penh): A Chinese man was found dead at 7:00 am on April 18, 2023 in the waste canal located at Bak Touk village, Sangkat Toul Sangke I, Khan Russey Keo, Phnom Penh.

The body of the unidentified Chinese man was 1.70 meters tall, wearing gray shorts and no shirt.

According to local people living near the scene,they would often see the man walking around aimlessly by the sewer, talking to himself. They thought that he might be mentally ill or taking drugs.

Then this morning, some people found him lying in there dead. Police in Tuol Sangke Police Station received information that someone had died so they went to the scene, cordoning it off while they recovered the body and examined the site. The Russey Keo District Police and the Technical and Scientific Office of the Phnom Penh Municipal Police were called to the scene, and after examination, the authorities confirmed that the Chinese man died of suffocation in the mud at the bottom of the drain.

The body, which has yet to be identified, was taken to Stung Meanchey pagoda while waiting to notify the man's relatives.

Fortunately a witness was at hand to denounce the murderers to the police, otherwise the case was classed as a suicide and closed.

2 arrested for broomstick murder of foreigner

2 men have been arrested in Phnom Penh on charges of beating a foreigner to death with a broomstick and dumping his body in a sewer – a crime which had previously been reported as a suicide

Russey Keo district police arrested 2 men yesterday on charges of murder, relating to the death of a 35 year old Chinese man on April 17, 2023 at 20:00 on the road in Tuol Sangke village, Tuol Sangke I commune. Khan Russey Keo, Phnom Penh.

Russey District Inspector Keo Heang Tharet named the 2 suspects as Sroeun Rith, male, 37 years old, Occupation: Motorbike taxi driver and Ear Tuk, male, 30 years old, occupation: car repairman

The man’s body was discovered by residents at around 7am on the 18th of April in Bak Touk village, Sangkat Toul Sangke I, Khan Russey Keo, Phnom Penh.

Locals said that for the last few days, they saw the man walking alone in the area

The death was originally described as a suicide,however upon receiving additional information, the 2 arrests were made and a 50cm broomstick – believed to be the murder weapon – was recovered

Inspector Keo Heang Tharet stated the deceased appeared to have wandered into the suspect’s house, where an altercation took place that ended in the man’s death and the dumping of his body in a nearby sewer

Police are now questioning the 2 men.

Police: After a forensic examination, we confirm that the dead man commited suicide by throwing himself into a drain and suffocating to death in the mud.
Witness: I saw two men throwing a dead body into the drain at midnight.

Good police work there. It was death by broomstick, not death by mud. It really makes you wonder about some of the deaths reported as accidents and suicides.
