12 Fake Monks Busted
April 4, 2023

On 3 April 2023, the Prey Veng City Police arrested 12 youths who were pretending to be monks at Tuol Prech pagoda, in Svay Sokho village, Cheung Teuk commune, Prey Veng city, Prey Veng province.

Four of the youths tested positive for drugs and all twelve were sent to Prey Veng Provincial Court for impersonating monks.

Kind of related, but not really.

In the nineties getting a train to Chang Mai from Hua Lamphong I noticed a young monk from behind sitting crossed legged in robes with his head bowed deeply almost into his lap. As I came up alongside I expected to see him in prayer or reading - his eyes were open wide, his face fixed hard, his fingers working feverishly at a Gameboy.

Ive noticed the fake monks are back in PP. seen a few of them now. Chinese beggers is all they are. Preying mostly on tourists who dont know any better.

Yes, I got approached by one of them a couple of weeks ago. I didn't find out how good his English was, but he did understand "fcuk off". Works with Mormons too.
