Talks on Direct Flights Between Australia and Cambodia
Cambodia, Australia Mull Direct Flight Connection
AKP Phnom Penh, March 30, 2023 --
Cambodia and Australia are determined to promote their bilateral cooperation in tourism sector, especially the establishment of direct flights between the two countries with an aim to attract more Australian tourists and investors to Cambodia.
The determination was made by H.E. Thong Khon, Cambodian Minister of Tourism, and H.E. Justin Kevin Whyatt, Australian Ambassador to Cambodia, during their meeting here at the ministry yesterday afternoon.
H.E. Thong Khon further sought the Australian side’s assistance to the conservation of Mekong dolphins in Kratie province, the development of potential tourism and ecotourism communities in Cambodia, the enhancement of human resources in the tourism sector, and strengthening of training techniques of the National Institute of Tourism and tourism education establishments.
In reply, the new Australian ambassador pledged to continue to expand cooperation in all areas, particularly tourism, between Australia and Cambodia.
H.E. Justin Kevin Whyatt said he will do his best to have Cambodia-Australia direct flight connection during his diplomatic tenure.
Cambodia has received more than 100,000 Australian tourists before the COVID-19 crisis.

Re: Talks on Direct Flights Between Australia and Cambodia
How many additional tourists from Australia would be attracted by a direct flight? Not many I think. If they want to come here they stop in KL or BKK, or SIN etc. Often they will incorporate other countries into the trip, so flying direct means nothing to them.
Direct flight are nice as they clip 2 or 3 hours off the overall journey time, and should be a little cheaper as there is less taking off and landing and more cruising. But the airlines will only begin a direct route if they can make a profit (no amount of diplomatic pleading will change that) and, furthermore, if they are the only operator on a direct route, expect to pay a juicy premium for those 3 hours saved.

Re: Talks on Direct Flights Between Australia and Cambodia
With modern fuel efficient single aisle planes able to fly 7000-9000km, opening Australia-Cambodia route is more viable than ever. If you look visitor numbers from Australia before covid then 1-2 weekly direct flights from Australia is not that far fetched idea.

Philippines operates their A321Neo XLR variant from Manilla to Brisbane. That aircraft also has the range to get from Sydney or Melbourne to PP and carries about 180 passengers. So yes, that sounds viable.rogerrabbit wrote: ↑Fri Mar 31, 2023 9:59 am With modern fuel efficient single aisle planes able to fly 7000-9000km, opening Australia-Cambodia route is more viable than ever. I'm not an AV geek, I only know this as I was surprised to find out the Air Portugal operates it from Lisbon to Toronto so I checked out this wonder plane. I flew on it from PP to Manilla recently.
Do Qantas have any?

150,000 visitors from Australia in 2018, or just over 2,800 a week. However, when I worked in SR; the vast majority of Australian guests came from neighbouring countries (Vietnam, Thailand, Laos).rogerrabbit wrote: ↑Fri Mar 31, 2023 9:59 am With modern fuel efficient single aisle planes able to fly 7000-9000km, opening Australia-Cambodia route is more viable than ever. So what % of that 150k visitors came to Cambodia only and just transited through VN, TH or KL etc?hanno wrote: ↑Fri Mar 31, 2023 10:43 am150,000 visitors from Australia in 2018, or just over 2,800 a week. You would need 1000 passengers each week from one city to begin to justify a 3 or 4 days a week service. That sounds like a tall order with just 2800 a week and the majority of those visit other countries as well as Cambodia, thus defeating the point of a direct service.
Qantas can drop them off in SIN and onto the SIN-PP Jetstar and that keeps it all on the family.
Re: Talks on Direct Flights Between Australia and Cambodia
And let's not forget the Australian tourists aren't all flying from a single origin point. Direct flights to Cambodia from Melbourne or Sydney won't be much use to those in NT or WA. Better as mentioned above, just feed everyone from around Australia into SIN and consolidate onto JetstarDoc67 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 31, 2023 11:11 amSo what % of that 150k visitors came to Cambodia only and just transited through VN, TH or KL etc?hanno wrote: ↑Fri Mar 31, 2023 10:43 am150,000 visitors from Australia in 2018, or just over 2,800 a week. Re: Talks on Direct Flights Between Australia and Cambodia
3-4 days a week service might be too much at start but twice a week definitely doable with those visitor numbers for some low cost airline.Doc67 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 31, 2023 11:11 amSo what % of that 150k visitors came to Cambodia only and just transited through VN, TH or KL etc?hanno wrote: ↑Fri Mar 31, 2023 10:43 am150,000 visitors from Australia in 2018, or just over 2,800 a week. Qantas has ordered 20 long range single aisle planes. Deliveries should start later this year. Also some Australian low cost airlines have orders in for these long range small Airbus planes.

Think outside of the box, or in this case outside of the passenger cabin and below into the cargo hold. Airlines probably make more money from flying cargo than from passengers if you take into account what has to be supplied to passengers and air hostess and crews and direct flights would mean more fresh vegetables and other stuff available in PP
