I find that quite ridiculous too. Rimbaud and Verlaine and Baudelaire were more inspired by opium and alcohol. The interminably boring beat poets went for copious amounts of booze, benzos, smack and loans off their moms and estranged wives. Those people might have smoked hashish or weed at various points but it didn't define them.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Hash House Harriers:John Bingham wrote: ↑Sun Mar 26, 2023 12:15 am Rimbaud and Verlaine and Baudelaire were more inspired by opium and alcohol. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Club_des_HashischinsThe Club des Hashischins (sometimes also spelled Club des Hashishins or Club des Hachichins, "Club of the Hashish-Eaters") was a Parisian group dedicated to the exploration of drug-induced experiences, notably with hashish. Members included Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, Charles Baudelaire, Gérard de Nerval, Honoré de Balzac, Paul Verlaine, and Arthur Rimbaud.
The club was active from about 1844 to 1849 and counted the literary and intellectual elite of Paris among its members, including Dr. Jacques-Joseph Moreau, Théophile Gautier, Charles Baudelaire, Gérard de Nerval, Eugène Delacroix and Alexandre Dumas. Monthly "séances" were held at the Hôtel de Lauzun (at that time Hôtel Pimodan) on the Île Saint-Louis.
[...]
The club members often consumed Dawamesc, a greenish paste made from cannabis resin mixed with fat, honey, and pistachios.
https://www.theguardian.com/books/2002/ ... anreview34It was inevitable that Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867), author of the 1857 collection of poetry Les Fleurs du Mal, joined the club. He had a reputation for debauchery and a taste for the exotic, which would surely have predisposed him to a new drug, but the truth was that he rarely, if indeed ever, indulged. He wrote on hashish with great acuity, but it was from his studious note-taking, rather than any in-depth personal experience.
[...] As Baudelaire put it, "wine makes men happy and sociable; hashish isolates them. Wine exalts the will; hashish annihilates it."
There are two stages necessary to creativity. The first requires an open, relaxed disposition which some narcotics can help create, the second the sober practice of the artist's craft. Brainstorming followed by the imposition of structure.
But that's just like, my opinion, man.

No, Verlaine and Rimbaud smoked hash. So did the beats along with amphetamines and the rest of the old school drugs ...John Bingham wrote: ↑Sun Mar 26, 2023 12:15 amI find that quite ridiculous too. There is a common misconception about 18th and 19th century poets. Yes, Coleridge did use laudanum, and others, too. Hash came along a little later and was not so commonly known...
... But Verlaine and Rimbaud were definitely weed smokers... So were the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and Ginsberg, and others. It was Burroughs who was the lifelong heroin junkie...

To add a little detail about the above information...
The English traded with China and India and that's how they got into opium early. The French were into Africa, and Algeria would have been their early supplier of hashish; so, it is no surprise British or English-speaking historians would presume the French were doing the same drugs they were. But, hashish was very popular with 19th-century Paris cafe society...
Another couple of titbits: Kerouac wrote many of his most famous novels in only a month or two, since he consumed vast quantities of amphetamines all the time... Also, Jean-Paul Sartre wrote "Being and Nothingness" on amphetamines, too...

When scientists scraped out pipes thought to belong to William Shakespeare they found that old Bill might have been rocking the Ganga while writing.
