Sihanoukville Passenger Train Hits Truck at Crossing

Cambodia News, (Sihanoukville): Prey Nup District: At around 4 pm on March 21, 2023, there was a traffic accident when a truck crossed the railway tracks directly into the path of an oncoming passenger train.According to authorities, two people on the train were injured (one driver and one passenger on the train), as well as the two people in the truck.
The incident happened on a dirt road crossing the Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville railway line in Prek Pros village, Teuk Thla commune, Prey Nob district, Preah Sihanouk province.

The preliminary report from the police states that a white HYUNDAI land truck,(with license plate Tbong Khmum 3A-7015),was being driven by Reu Chivorn, male, 33 years old, with the works foreman, named Keo Piseth,40, along as a passenger. The impact of the moving train severely damaged the truck, and the two men were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Two other people were also hurt in the collision: the train driver, Oum Sambath, and another man, one of the 22 train passengers, escaped with light injuries.

Is this like the 3rd or 4th in a matter of months?

Bit extreme no? Or is this a common thing that has escaped me until recently?

Too many uncontrolled crossings and people get used to not seeing a train the last 50 times they crossed so they aren't careful.

I don't think I'd ever take one until they control all the crossings reliably.

People seem to have stopped sleeping on the train tracks, so that's a start, but educating truck drivers to give way to other vehicles (including, and especially, trains) might take a bit longer.

But, who knows ? Judging from the photos, it doesn't look like there is any sort of barrier or warning sign for road traffic - but, then again, maybe the "road" is not even a road, could be just a dirt track used by the trucks which goes across the railway line (because that's the shortest line between two points.)

Must say, that it's not often that the road vehicle injures the train in these sort of collisions.

It's not like the train track is moving randomly over years, so no indulgence for the dumb driver who knows what lies there, and has all the panoramic sight to check if indeed a train is coming or not, if brave enough to turn his neck a bit.
And that's a 30 km/h collision max, which is like snail's slow-motion.

Solely injured lucky fuckers, they wouldn't get a second chance in my place ^^

The thing is a national embarrassment, MPWT should step in & enforce building of proper manned/unmanned crossings, bridges, tunnels, etc to ensure the safety of both rail and road users. Heck the train is so slow you could put a runner in front of it to control traffic up ahead as a budget option. Somebody needs to open their wallet - if there is money for new skyscrapers, there is money for safe crossings.

Agreed. It would be billions, not millions, to secure every railway crossing in the country. Even Germany has crossings without barriers, but drivers know to effing look before crossing.

Phew, that was close . . . Twitter dude and blogger of all things Thailand, Richard Barrow, was supposed to be on this very train to S'ville as part of his train guide project. In fact, when he announced it the day before, blogger Jacob in Cambodia noted how often the train has accidents at level crossings. FYI: The train model DMU apparently was built in Mexico.

So what's the point of building three port on the coast for billion+ when you have the transport everything in old trucks to PP? If they're serious about freight to/from the coast then they really need to add this to the cost; it isn't about the elephant pant flip-flop brigade heading down to the beach for a jolly on the cheap & drivers seem to be getting much worse, not better, the driving test is an absolute joke.
