Sihanoukville Passenger Train Hits Truck at Crossing

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

There is not really a big difference between an old train and old trucks. Useally the official reason is: its environamental-friendlier, but the real reason Is: its cheaper. In europe and probably in the whole world it works like this. Money wins the war !! Any railway-company gets a lot of money from the tax-payer because without they all would go bankrupt, they are to big to run (the companies), and at the last 25 miles you have to put the container again on a truck, the train doesnt deliver a container of beer at Phsar Kandal.

Take a look at the average driver, be it Moto, car, SUV, truck or TukTuk, the next time that you’re out and about. TukTuks especially.
Their heads barely move. They frequently enter or cross junctions looking only in the direction that they are going, and rarely in the direction of where the threat comes from.
Likewise, doing U-turns or pulling out into traffic. For the most part, the assumption appears to be that it’s up to other drivers not to hit the vehicle that’s now in the way, and for the most part they get away with it.

The starting point is having a national driving licence that’s taken seriously.
You can teach an idiot to drive and follow basic procedures. But an idiot cannot teach the same.

This is saddening, the number of accidents involving trains is WAY too high considering the low number.of train journeys on offer.

I just returned from several weeks in Thailand last month

One thing you notice all the time, is that so many people get on their motorbikes, pull out onto the road & only then check to see if there is any traffic coming :)
