Rip off tales

Post by Khmu Nation »

I am in Hanoi for the weekend doing a visa run. I just got a motorbike taxi (xe om) back from that lake to my hotel. It took about 10 minutes. About 3km.

The dude wanted 500,000 VND! Ha ha ha. That's $20!

I told him no so he went for 200,000 VND. Ha ha ha.

I told him to fuck himself. Địt mẹ mày! Then he got the arse with me. So he got nothing.

The taxi driver from the airport wanted1.5million VND as well. He got 700,000 VND - which is still to much.

I hate this country. I fucking hate it.

Why don't you just use Grab? Never a problem, you know the price beforehand.

Its hard words to hate a full nation just because some transport sharks tried to rip you off.

https://www.hanoitransferservice.com/ offers rides into city for 17$ with no hassle and you would probably had a more pleasant arrival.
work is for people who cant find truffles

I didnt use Grab because I don't have a Vietnamese Sim Card. I'm only here for two days. Anyway this cunt had his Grab helmet, all that shit.

What a dickhead.

Fuck this place. Its full of Johnny Travellers wandering around. Plus all these hideous white women in skimpy tops and hot pants. Someone needs to tell these women you can only wear clothes like that if you got it going on. Otherwise do yourself a flavor and dress modestly.

I also saw the fattest person I have ever seen. White dude. He was so huge I almost asked him for a photograph.

Fuck knows how he got himself here. He must have come by cargo ship. No way he's fitting on a plane.

He was HUGE.

Lesson one when going to Vietnam. ALWAYS agree to a price before hand. They are notorious for ripping people off and have been every since my first visit in 1995.

I lived in Saigon for 8 years and came across this bullshit all the time. Hundreds of examples.

But alright, snowflake, just for you:

I'm generalizing here.

There are many lovely Vietnamese people too.

Happy?

The taxi guy refused to agree the price - there were no other taxis around so I got in. Standard price is about 300,000 vnd to 500,000 vnd. He asked for 1.5 million, he got 700,000 - and he didnt complain. He knew and I knew.

The other dude - well I don't know about you but if I'm taking a xe om all of 3km, I'm not about to be negotiating the price before I get on.

Also I am fairly generous with these type of people and I'm not bothered paying a white boy rate.

Twice the price than a local would pay for a 3km ride? Yeah. No problem. Three times the price? I can let that fly.

But fifteen times?!

No fucking way.

Well-heeled middle-aged couples who visit Vietnam don't seem to mind the price gouging. If I point out to them that they are being charged multiples of the going rate they invariably shrug and say But it's so cheap here anyway...

Budget travellers and expats whether retirees or working there generally do. So much so that the daily struggle and the disrespect they encounter often motivates them to relocate elsewhere, or not to return. And that's despite the many attractions the country has.

Hanoi tax drivers are legendary, and I too have refused to pay anything on one occasion (metered taxi) because I knew the rate was ridiculous. But they get a bit stroppy and have the advantage in numbers, so I wouldn't recommend it.

I have heard a hundred stories of minor rip-offs and major scams. Some of the most audacious are amusing, but it can be a stressful life going into every encounter with your guard up.

I used to love Vietnam when I was in my 20s and 30s. It was my favorite country on earth, and that includes my own.

But I'm 50 now and I can't be bothered with the place. Not saying its gone down the pan - its the same, just more.

I'm looking forward to going home. (Laos.)
