Phnom Penh: Dr. Chea Serey, Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia, said that the mindset of the people is the biggest obstacle that has led to the slow growth of the use of the riel in Cambodia, which requires the participation of all circles, especially the public.

Speaking on the occasion of the 43rd anniversary of the re-introduction of the riel in Cambodia, ( March 20, 1980 - March 20, 2023), on March 19, 2023, at Aeon Mall Meanchey (AEON 3), Phnom Penh, Dr. Chea Serey said: "The use of the riel in Cambodia has increased in the past, but not to a large extent, because the main obstacle to the universal use of the riel is the mindset of the people".

I would like to see more 100,000 riel notes. It's a shame that ATMs currently only dispense 50,000 and 20,000 riel notes.

It's already difficult to obtain change for the 50.000. note.

Why does anyone use USD?

Locals see riel and seem to treat you better. Always cheaper too

I can't say that has ever been a problem for me, but I wouldn't try to pay let's say a 7,000 riel Grab ride with a 50,000 riel note. I either use them for larger transactions or where I can expect that change isn't a problem.

A friend paid back a $75 loan with 3 of them. Nice notes but too similar to a 10,000 for my liking (after a few beers and a dark bar). I have spent two of them already but I honestly can't remember where...

With ABA/Acleda QR domination, the notes are somewhat obsolete nowadays.
